Hi everyone,

My wife is a us passport holder but left the country aged 3 and has never returned. We are currently going through the process of getting my visa approved but we have been asked to submit the last 3 years tax returns and realised we needed a social security number in order to do it, but she has never been given one. She went to the us consulate in Australia and was told that she would need to provide educatirecords employment records for the last 30 years to prove she never resided in the us. It just seems crazy and we have spoken to her schools but their records don't go back that far. Has anyone else experienced tins situation? Any advice would be helpful.

Thanks

US Citizens are required to file taxes in the US no matter where they live. It says it right on her passport.

I am not sure how you obtain a SSN from abroad, but asking the embassy seems like the first logical step.

AOS for my husband
8/17/10: INTERVIEW DAY (day 123) APPROVED!!

ROC:
5/23/12: Sent out package
2/06/13: APPROVED!
