I've tried to do a search but can't find answers...curious to know what exactly is covered in interviews? Do they ask questions about plans for work in the US? Do they ask questions to make sure that documents provided are legit?

Hi,

I just had my interview last month. Our case was very straight forward and I was asked the following questions at my interview:

What do you do for a living?

How did you meet your husband?

How long have you been married?

What does your husband do for a living?

When did you meet your husband?

Where does your husband live?

I have not been working for two years. So when I was asked what I did for a living, I said, "I'm not currently working, but I am trained in a few fields that I hope to get back into when I move to the States. Hopefully either Tourism or Dental Assisting, but I also have a lot of retail experience too". The guy seemed fine with that and checked off "Housewife/Househusband" on the form.

I had no issues or hassles at the consulate. It was all very mundane, but like I said, we didn't have any weird issues with our petition. I think by the time you are at the consulate they know if your documents are legit or not. You do HAVE TO HAVE THE ORIGINALS of all the documents that you submitted by electronic processing (scanned to the NVC). I had to have the originals of my Birth Certificate, Marriage License, Divorce Certificate, Police Certificate, two passport sized photos (US Passport size 2in. X 2in.), Husband's affidavit of support (I-864ez), and my Husband's 2011 Tax Transcript. So make sure you bring ALL these ORIGINALS and any other documents that you had to submit for your case.

NOTE: You CANNOT bring anything into the Consulate with you except your paperwork and wallet, so don't forget to leave that stuff at the hotel or locked in your car. NO: kindles, cell phones, ipods, purses, backpacks, briefcases etc... I brought the file folder with all my papers in it (you can put the file folder in a plastic grocery bag) and my wallet.

ALSO: Make sure you have your DHL/Loomis registration form with you or they won't let you in.

Check out some of these super helpful things too:

I stayed the International Hostel: http://hostellingmontreal.com/en/home.aspx?sortcode=2

It is SUPER cheap if you don't mind sharing a room. I did a quad room and it was fine for me. They also have private rooms for around 90.00 per night. Kitchen facilities and free wifi too.

What visa are you applying for?

It states Cr-1/Ir-1. Interviews are normally very quick--less than 10 minutes. Most wonder after the interview 1) why they worried so much and 2) I really just forked over $$$$ for hotels and airfare/food for this?? They normally ask very basic questions--how you met--what ur spouse does for work, what ur plans are? Very basic. Now if ur have been born in a country not friendly to the USA or lived in one for an extended amount of time, the questions will probably still be basic, but they may "review" ur case longer, so not a fast turn around in getting ur visa!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

After reading a bit more posts, "basic" is what I was getting, but just wanted to make sure. I guess it's the practical guy in me that thinks surely, there has to be a reason why US wants personal interviews, especially after all of the documents that has to be provided. But nonetheless, if it must be done, I'd prefer that it's basic. Just sucks having to fly to Montreal, get a hotel, spend money on food, etc. But bright side, never been to Montreal so might as well take advantage of it.

I have a quick question regarding the medical exam in Montreal and the interview. Is the total number of passport style photos really 5?? 3 for the medical exam and 2 for the interview? Thanks in advance :)

Yes, that is correct. 3 photos for the medical, and 2 for the interview. They must be USA sized passport photos. 2 inches by 2 inches.
