Birth Certificate - needs notarized?

Hi everyone!

I need your help!

Does the original birth certificated need to be notarized?

I've translated by myself, exactly what the certificate indicates.

I know my friend did it by herself and got accepted!

Anyone out there have done it by yourself to translate?

You mean the translation, right? It doesn't need to be notarized.

You can translate your birth certificate yourself BUT you need to certify your translation. I did it with no problem.

This is what the USCIS say:

"Please submit certified translations for all foreign language documents. The translator must certify that s/he is competent to translate and that the translation is accurate.

The certification format should include the certifier's name, signature, address, and date of certification. A suggested format is:

Certification by Translator

I [typed name], certify that I am fluent (conversant) in the English and ________ languages, and that the above/attached document is an accurate translation of the document attached entitled ______________________________.

Signature_________________________________

Date Typed Name

Address

If you translated your birth certificate and that you are competent in english and the other language, you are the one certifying your translation. You just include a page with the paragraph I copied above, and you sign and date.

Some websites say that the petitioner/applicant cannot translate their own birth certificate. Ask a friend to do it for you and write his/her name, address, phone number and signature. That's what I did and it worked. Don't forget to staple the 3 pages together (birth certificate, translation and certification of translation) good luck!!

Do "Some websites" source their info with a USCIS statement? The USCIS instructions do not say anywhere that we can't translate our own documents. I translated my own birth certificate, like many other people here. No RFE, no problem at interview.

If you actually google the question you'll find an answer in a website called Avvo (it is a website where you can ask legal questions and they are answered by real lawyers, hopefully you know this already) 4 inmigration lawyers say the same thing, "you cannot translate your own birth certificate." The USCIS does not say that we CAN translate it either. If you do a little research you'll find both answers. Good for you they accepted your translation. All cases are reviewed by different inmigration employees, and some of them are very picky. I would never give an advise without doing a reserch in SOME WEBSITES. Bonne chance my friend!!

I only trust the USCIS instructions, the VJ guides and experienced members on VJ. If you read the VJ forums regularly like me, you will quickly realize that some lawyers (even immigration lawyers, so some "real" ones) very often give some wrong advice. I stopped counting the number of people who hired a lawyer and got a RFE during their process. Sorry that I don't trust "some websites". Good for you if you want to be extra-cautious though, it's not bad either.
