Hi guys

I am gathering all my packet 3 info. When we filed I-130 in Calgary, we provided them with translations of my original birth certificate (Spanish) and other documents, following the tips on VJ - done by someone "conversant/fluent" in both languages and there was no problem.

However, the instructions from Montreal indicate we need to again translate "certified by a competent translator and sworn to him by a Notary Public". Does this mean I need a professional translation? And then what? Show up at the notary with the translations and the translator???? Last time it was done by a close friend who is fluent (as am I, but I thought that may be trouble doing it myself); so now I wonder.

I would very much appreciate your responses.

About translating documents you can have a friend who speaks Spanish do it. I would then have your friend sign the translation in front of a notary.

Have at the bottom of the translation with a statement like:

I certify that I am competent to translate from [Language] to English and that the above [identify the document and to whom it pertains] is a correct and true translation to the best of my knowledge and belief.

Date:_________________

Is now a US Citizen immigration completed Jan 12, 2012.

i had also needed my birth cert translated from french (Quebec) to english. i had found a translator do it in 2 copies with a seal of professional translator association (or something like that) and it cost approx 30$.

Just mentioning it in case the notary thing is more expensive. :)
