i'd rather have both funding and conducting research, i certainly wouldn't want to have just one or the other.

There is only two things that really advance mankind........ Private industry that is driven by greed to produce wonderful new things--Light Bulbs, Automobiles(Henry ford figured out how to do it cheaper and faster something the govt will never do)

The other thing that drives technology is war or threat of war... Supersonic flight, space exploration, the internet, Battlefield medicine , etc etc.

Greed and war baby... They innovate.

Name one peace driven govt agency that devolved #######.

Oh and I forgot sex...

Thank you Pfizer!!!!!!!!!!

Is you over 40 years of age, a USCitizen by birth, lived (mostly) in USA since birth?

You should know that stuff, regardless of yer scientific prowess or lack thereof.

That stuff has been common knowledge since Mr. Gore had his show-down, hit all the news-media - the backgrounders were published in laymen's terms.

Okay, how about the World Wide Web? It was developed by scientists in Europe, as a means to share data and results quickly when they weren't physically in the same place. War, medicine or even space exploration weren't really a factor in its development.

How about it ? as is, it wasn't a network - it was a 'thing' that ran on top of, and through, a network.

Science and technological innovation are not the same thing. Technological innovation can result from science, but that can take years and years. The discovery of penicillin is good example of 'boring and stupid scientific work' leading to a medical revolution.

govt agency that devolved #######

I haven't worked for a government agency, but I might hypothesize that government agencies are pretty good at passing ####### around.
