The right (and especially the religious right) really do have a poor record when it comes to applying critical thinking... Though most people tend to let critical thinking skills go out the window for their own personal I-want-this-to-be-true-isms.. Try telling a person on the left how organic foods really do not taste better and are not better for you and you will see science go out the window.. Same with recycling, nuclear power, etc.. Show a person their want-to-be-true-isms are false and science will not persuade them.

People believe in lots of stupid stupid things like Feng-shui, crystals, magnets fixing blood problems, homeopathy, astrology, talking to the dead, Ouija Boards, etc, etc... Very sad.

Private industry has around 7 times the revenue the Federal government does, and somehow manages to actually make money, unlike the Federal government that currently spends half again as much as it takes in revenue. So you say government needs to take more money out of the private sector for research. Wrong. Private industry has the money and the incentive to conduct its own research.

i'd rather have both funding and conducting research, i certainly wouldn't want to have just one or the other.

seriously, what is the point? in my experience ingenuity is priceless.

Ingenuity is. I agree. How are you going to crumble a mountain of debt over your head? It takes ingenuity to do it. Like cutting science programs that do nothing to contribute to the growing debt. This is the information age though. Just wish it was the financial information age.

we can split hairs or we can take money shots. the amount of money cut from research, that in some cases saves our lives not just enriches, could easily be matched and surpassed focusing elsewhere.

For all the money the US spends on public education, the schools are not producing the people in enough quantity to satisfy the needs of industry. Other countries are. Something is wrong with this equation. I have seen where industry works hand in hand with public education. That system is successful, since the schools actually provide industry with the people they need. I have also seen the flip side when that cooperation ends, because of some hippie save the planet bullshit.

Why can't doors just open and close like they do on Star Trek?

Interestingly enough do you know they had prop men doing that by hand every time someone came thru a door. I remember Bill S talking about it several years ago on some show. Oddly enough I can't remember what i did with my keys or why I sat at the computer.
