Fact of the matter is that the outcome of the OP is much more likely than the fantasy world of the lone armed hero saving he day. Fact is that a gun in the house is much more likely to kill a member or acquaintance of that household than it is to protect that house from an intruder. The former is 12 times more likely than the latter.
