Note here: I always believed one didn't have to show ID, and hubby being ex agent agrees

And indeed, you don't -- but you do need a driver's license to drive (and the guy was in a car.)

Technicality, he was not behind the wheel as he was standing on the grass behind the vehicle. It is my understanding that one must be behind the wheel.

I agree, but I bet it was obvious that he was the driver of the vehicle.

"Sir, is this your vehicle?"

"Yes"

"May I see your driver's license and registration?"

"No"

They sure didn't ask for his driver's license and registration. They clearly said the word 'ID' and that was it.

Would also like to add, my brother-in-law was fishing recently and fell asleep in his chair with the line still in the water. Cops drive up, wake him up and ask to see ID. He asked 'why, am I under arrest'. They said 'No, but we need to see your ID'. No other explaination from them. He told them he doesn't have to show them any ID, and walked off to get a cigarette. They arrested him and whilst he was handcuffed they took his ID from his pocket so they could write their report. He was charged with resisting arrest.

it's always a good idea to obey the police. ;)

from what i saw of it, i doubt anything negative will happen to the police involved. the subject was not obeying police commands.

Why would he? He's a student there, probably had tons of assignments to finish --

forgot his ID, big F-ing deal. I hope they fire those cops.

he was told to depart, he didn't, and downhill it went with him refusing to obey the police.

He was walking out when the police showed up.

hence still on the grounds he was told to depart from previously.

He was being a snot and they had a right to eject him from the lab, even to drag him out. But he was walking out on his own when the police tased him. They got what they wanted. He was leaving. Yeah, he was slow about it, but that's a pretty piss poor reason to shoot him with a taser. The goal of the police was to have him leave, and he was leaving. He wasn't fighting them. They grabbed him as he was walking out and he went limp. They tased him when he was limp. Then they threatened to tase him again unless he stood up! He'd just been shocked! Tasers are temporarily debilitating. He wasn't fighting. Why did they keep shocking him? How does tasing someone limp on the floor get them to stand up and leave faster?

Police have a responsibility to keep their cool and use good judgement. They're not supposed to be the ones escalating the situation. If they'd just let him walk out, like he was doing, he would have been the one looking dumb for yelling and making a scene and being slow about leaving. But the cops attacked him and got filmed, even got filmed threatening to tase another student who asked for their badge number, and now they're gonna lose their jobs. Poor decisionmaking.

who had the right to eject him from the lab? the police? not their place to eject him. that is the province of those who work in the lab. the police are there to enforce that wish of the employees. that this individual didn't leave after being told to, he lingered in the area long enough for the police to be summoned and arrive (and just how long have any of us waited for the police to arrive anywhere?) indicates to me that this individual was being an azz as best he could. when the long arm of the law finally caught up to him, yeah, he was so debilitated by the taser.........i could not tell with the way his mouth kept running and running like an energizer bunny.

in my opinion the police were not escalating the situation, which you believe they were. they subdued an individual who refused to leave, who refused to follow instructions by the police, and upon being tased, still refused to follow directions. imo, he got what he earned.

Hmm some people on certain narcotics will respond poorly to an initial tasing and require a second, perhaps his refusal to obey 1) the original request for identification, 2) the original request to leave, the police probably asked the person to leave (not in the video though), 3) direct command to stand up (the perp originally says "F##K OFF" at the first command to stand....lead the officers to believe he was under the influence...remember it is a college!

Not enough of the video leading up to the event in question to know if he was inciting or being disruptive or just minding his own business...before the first tasing....

Obnoxious a$$ kid deserved it. He was mouthing off and trying to be the tough guy from the beginning. If kids don't get enough discipline at home and learn to respect others, then when they do mess up and act like a$$es to the cops then the cops need to take measures like these. I also believe it should be ok for cops to shoot people that run away from them too! Call me ott, but people have no respect for law or consequence anymore!

I can't access the video here at work, but was the student being disruptive before being asked for his ID? While it may be a requirement for students to show their ID's, the person confronting him could have politely asked him to bring it next time and left him alone. Unless the student was asking to check out a book and if he wasn't being disruptive, the situation didn't call for getting the Campus Police.
