MSNBC is leaning forward into your living room and trying to place a whole new spin on the “it takes a village” theory of raising children.

In an unsettling promo for the network released last week, MSNBC contributor Melissa Harris-Perry says flatly that Americans hold a misconception that children belong to their parents.

Here’s what Harris-Perry said in the spot:

We have never invested as much in public education as we should have, because we’ve always had a kind of private notion of children. Your kids is yours, and totally your responsibility. We haven’t had a very collective notion of ‘These are our children.’ So part of it, we have to break through our kind of private idea that kids belong to their parents, or kids belong to their families, and recognize that kids belong to whole communities. Once it’s everybody’s responsibility, and not just the household’s, then we start making better investments.

She may be right but the way she said it is like waving a big red flag at a large and angry bull! Nobody is seen as having a right to abuse their children or deprive them of medical care or an education. Children are recognized as having rights and society, the courts, and law enforcement are tasked with enforcing this. Using the word 'community' for this will just irritate the xxxx out of right-wingers!

MSNBC knows this will get the letters MSNBC into the headlines.

A little inartful wording is a small price to pay for all that free publicity.
