Which Consulate?

I am living in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. My fiance has sent in the petition for the K1. I am wondering which consulate I can go to for my interview. There is a consulate in Calgary. But I have seen some sites that seem to indicate that the K1 visa issuance can only be done in Vancouver or Montreal. It would be great to have a definite answer on this one. I have been wondering for a while now. Thanks!

I don’t think they’d be able to go to Montréal even if they wanted to. They’re pretty strict on which provinces/territories go where.

That being said, Vancouver is quicker for both the return time for the medical and for getting appointments.

Good luck in your journey.

I realize that you are just starting out your journey, so I wanted to share some stuff for you to get started with.

- Find your vaccination record (if you can). If your mum doesn’t have one call one of the Public Health Clinics and they may have record of you. Make an appointment to get your boosters updated and any extra vaccinations you may need. Some of the shot series take a while to complete (I think 6 months for Hep B). There is a list of the vaccinations needed on your medical exam Dr’s website: http://www.drcheema.ca. I took a copy of my age group to the travel health clinic so I’d only get what was required and they tested me for chicken pox right at the clinic and then gave me a Tdap booster (free). Don’t forget to get your flu vaccine once it becomes available in the fall.

- Order your long form birth certificate if you don’t have one already. It has to have your parents’ names on it to be accepted. The little AB cards don’t work (if you were born here). Some other provinces can be a pain to get the BC so it’s better to do this sooner than later.

- Check out the expiry date on your passport. It’s going to have to have an expiry date of 6 months or after your interview so if it’s going to expire anytime in the next year, it’ll be something to look at closer to your interview date. The reason I say closer to your interview date is if you are planning on changing your name, it’s currently free to get a new one within the first year.

- Look into the cost and locations for police reports. I went to the Commissionaires here in Lethbridge as they were only $37.50 and only took 2 days - they have Calgary locations as well. The police station here was charging a lot more and was going to take longer. Just make sure they realize you only need a CPIC check and not fingerprints (cheaper and faster).

Hope CSC starts speeding up for you :)

WOW!! That was a great response and a lot of help. I didn't know anything about getting vaccinated. I assumed I didn't need to get any. So, THANK YOU for all of your help.

Check with your family doctor. They can send you for a teter test to determine which immunities you have. It saves time and can be used as proof of which vacinations you need. Public health in Alberta won't have much for records unless you are around 20 or so. They didn't have mine and all of my school shots we done in Alberta so my doc sent me for the teter tests. It is a simple blood draw to check all your levels.

For the long form birth certificate, you will likely need a guarenteur. My family doctor is mine.

Good luck on your journey.

My Dr. wouldn’t send me for titre tests. He made me go to the travel clinic and they did my titre test for chicken pox and gave me and my daughter the needed shots. Maybe it’s different city to city here? I know Lethbridge they have the travel health, the regular needle clinic and the lab all in the same building.

You don’t need a guarantor to get an Alberta Birth Certificate, you just fill out the form and take it to one of the registry agencies. http://www.servicealberta.gov.ab.ca/pdf/vs/DVS3522_App_for_Birth_SB_Marriage_Jan_22_2013.pdf

I called a place in Calgary that deals with immunization records yesterday. They told me in about 1 1/2 weeks I would get a copy of my record in the mail. So hopefully it comes.

I already got a copy of my long form birth certificate. I ordered it online. It was nice and easy to get.

Again, THANK YOU to all of you!
