Hi all,

I am confused about something. My fiancé entered the US on a K1 visa in March. We filed for, and received a social security number/card for her using her maiden name a few weeks ago. We got married last week on April 2. We returned to the social security office this morning to change her name to my last name and we were turned away. The lady said that we need to go to Immigrations and get the visa changed from a K1 to a K3 since she is my spouse now. She also said something about us needing a work permit with her married name on it before she could change the name at the social security administration. Does that make sense to anyone? I thought we could change her name once we got married? She was saying a lot of things that I never read about. Please help!

Thank you in advance.

Frank

No shes lying. You only need your marriage certificate to change it there is no "changing a K-1 to a K-3 " or anything of the sort. I went to my SS office with marriage cert and passport ( which was in maiden name) and they changed the name to married name. Try again and get someone competent this time or speak to the manager.

Your I-129f was approved in 5 days from your NOA1 date.

Your interview took 67 days from your I-129F NOA1 date.

AOS was approved in 2 months and 8 days without interview.

ROC was approved in 3 months and 2 days without interview.

This is completely wrong. You need to apply for AOS, not for a K3 visa.

She also said something about us needing a work permit with her married name on it before she could change the name at the social security administration. Does that make sense to anyone? I have heard that from multiple people lately. They all said they were turned down when they wanted to change their names, and were told that they need to return with their EAD in their married name as proof once they have it. I personally have thus not attempted to change my name on the SSN and am going to wait until I have my EAD since the SSN office is an hour's drive away. But as far as I understand, they SHOULD change it just with the marriage certificate and passport.
