Conn. gov faults gun lobbyists over restrictions

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Connecticut Gov. Dannel P. Malloy harshly criticized gun industry lobbyists on Sunday, saying they are doing too little to halt gun violence.

Just three days after he signed into law new restrictions on weapons and large-capacity magazines, the governor compared Wayne LaPierre, executive vice president of the National Rifle Association, to clowns and said lobbyists want to ensure that the industry can sell guns indiscriminately.

"Wayne reminds me of the clowns at the circus," Malloy said of LaPierre on CNN's "State of the Union." ''They get the most attention and that's what he's paid to do."

Representatives of the NRA did not immediately return a call seeking comment.

"What this is about is the ability of the gun industry to sell as many guns to as many people as possible even if they're deranged, even if they're mentally ill, even if they have a criminal background," Malloy said. "They don't care. They want to sell guns."

I love when politicians divert attention from their failure to keep the criminals and mentally deranged off the streets or away from people's property by blaming the damage they do on somebody else.

that statement is directly at odds with what the NRA had to say after the sandy hook shooting.

What the NRA says and what it actually does are two very different things. They have worked very hard to keep better background checks from being instituted anywhere. If they want to keep people safe, they should want to keep guns out of the hands of kooks and criminals. I'm not one of the people that believe banning the scary type of guns or limiting clip size will do anything to stop gun violence. I'm not against armed guards in schools either, but who's going to pay the cost? A small town here in Minnesota, jest recently decided to move the police station into the school. I thought that was a great idea for a small town.

The reason that the NRA does not want to expand background checks is that when a kook or criminal walks up to a counter and tries to buy a gun, and the dealer calls the FBI for the background check, that cook or criminal who laid out his ID and said "here's my name and ID and birthday and I want to illegally buy a gun" is simply denied but NOTHING is ever done to prosecute him. So they are not enforced. Then the kook or criminal, who filled out all the paperwork like a confession that he's committing a crime, simply walks out to freely try to procure a gun elsewhere.

So we give up. Background checks were heralded as a victory by the gun control crowd but have never been used to control illegal procurement of guns nor prosecute those who wish to procure them illegally, ever, so what the hell?

Maybe, too many variables to tell at this point. You should be thorough in background and mental exams when you recieve a firearm. This would reduce some of the violence that stems from it.

Perhaps a simple genetic screening should be included.
