Conn. gov faults gun lobbyists over restrictions

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Connecticut Gov. Dannel P. Malloy harshly criticized gun industry lobbyists on Sunday, saying they are doing too little to halt gun violence.

Just three days after he signed into law new restrictions on weapons and large-capacity magazines, the governor compared Wayne LaPierre, executive vice president of the National Rifle Association, to clowns and said lobbyists want to ensure that the industry can sell guns indiscriminately.

"Wayne reminds me of the clowns at the circus," Malloy said of LaPierre on CNN's "State of the Union." ''They get the most attention and that's what he's paid to do."

Representatives of the NRA did not immediately return a call seeking comment.

"What this is about is the ability of the gun industry to sell as many guns to as many people as possible even if they're deranged, even if they're mentally ill, even if they have a criminal background," Malloy said. "They don't care. They want to sell guns."

Its the prerogative of any company to sell as much product as possible. No company wants the government to limit how much they can sell. They may try to act like they give a damn publicly, but you can bet in the board room they're discussing the bottom line and how to increase sales, not how to make the world a better place. Also the NRA is just another special interest lobbyist group. Its job is to represent the interests of its members and its members don't want anyone putting any restrictions on what they can buy or own, and not to care if deviants use those guns to kill. So why is it news that a politician who is also pandering to his own supports should state the obvious while phrasing it rather negatively?

that statement is directly at odds with what the NRA had to say after the sandy hook shooting.

I love how the NRA goes on to blame video games and movies at the end of that statement. Hilarious.

"They want to take our guns! Buy more ammo!"

Despite portraying the NRA as a beacon of sanity in crazy Washington, LaPierre veered into conspiracy theories. The Second Amendment isn't just an American right, he said, it's the right that protects all other rights: "If you aren't free to protect yourself when the government puts its thumb on that freedom, then you're not free at all." He was not speaking in hypotheticals. LaPierre railed against universal background checks on gun purchases, which just passed a key Senate committee vote. Universal background checks is a gateway to a universal list of gun owners, LaPierre said. "Why build a list of all the good people? As if that would somehow make us safer from violent criminals or homicidal maniacs! ... What's the point of registering lawful gun owners anyway?" He offered a few theories: So newspapers can print names of gun owners for gangs to access, so the list can be hacked by the Chinese, so the list can be handed over to the Mexican government — "Oh, by the way, they've already requested it!"

Then he got real. "There are only two reasons to compile list of gun owners: to tax them or to take them."

About the only thing that Dianne Feinstein and the NRA agree on.

Feinstein said that video games play, "a very negative role for young people, and the industry ought to take note of that."

The California Democrat is the latest to add her voice to a chorus of lawmakers, including many Republicans, who have connected violence in video games to gun violence.

Same video games and music and movies in Canada. And plenty of other countries. Doesn't seem to have the impact it does in America, though.

In this case it must be the latitudes in which Canadian live, the water, the hole in the ozone layer, Canadian bacon, Maple sirup, etc Anything but guns. ... It can't possibly be the excessive amount of guns in the hands of the mentally challenged.

I must defer to you pro's. I have to confess I have never played a video game in my life. I have three daughters and none of them have ever asked for one.
