Yup, noted, tagged as 'current' and even understood! But still, trying to remember _when_ it stopped being used.

I'll ask him. He grew up in Tennessee, hardly a hotbed of PC. I'll ask if he was ever anything but Asian, at least to people who weren't being inadvertently or intentionally offensive.

Oh, I remember something this century. it's not a general thing, either.

'Sam Moon Oriental Trading Company' changed it's name to 'Sam Moon Inc' sometime in the last 3 years.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !
Ya know, you can find the answer to your question with the advanced search tool, when using a PC? Ditch the handphone, come back later on a PC, and try again.

I grew up with this.

That was beautiful. That will go alongside the Doug Flutie pass as one of the greatest moments of sports of all times.

Okay, he says he's always been Asian, not Oriental. So the nomenclature was in practice from at least the early/mid 70s for Asian-American kids in Tennessee.

I think it depends on your age and the exposure you have with asian people or ideas.

I was not aware it was offensive until about 8 or 10 years ago, the words just seemed interchangeable, until someone mentioned it too me.

An even older term is "chinaman" I have heard old timers throw that one out. I doubt most people mean to use an incorrect term, they simply don't know.

I bet you anything if you took a poll more than half the people in this country would NOT know "oriental" is an offensive term, simply because there are a huge amount of people that have no interaction with Asians so the opportunity to correct ill- learned terms is not present.

I have an older Vietnamese woman as a patient. Whenever she is in my office she refers to herself and her friends as "Orientals".

She came to this country with her GI husband back in the Vietnam war days.

The term oriential is to knowledge only considered offensive in the United States of America. In the rest of the Anglo phone world, the term is usually considered archaic more than anything else.

About the same for my friend. She is 48 year old Pinay. Came over with a GI from Subic.

I wonder if that holds true for blacks too, ie, replace Asian with black and oriental with, chose derogatory term for blacks?

I think there are about only two terms that you can use today... AA and black..

I do use brother with Me and my black friends. They tell me all the time things like,, Hook a brother up or they will do anything to keep from paying a brother

Here we go again........................ :ot:

He never gives it a rest, no matter how far-reaching or unrelated his post might be.

Here he is suggesting that people might be confused over what common terms are derogatory towards blacks.

Like Nubian? That is on about the same level of misuse as Occidental and Oriental.

The only persons I have ever heard use that term are blacks as in Nubian Princess or something like that.

Just for fun I put that term in Youtube and it would appear I was right.... again.
