My wife and some more of our friends were out tonight. One of our best friends who is Philippina, as is my wife, was talking about a woman from Thailand. She said " she is Oriental also".

She is a little older about 48. I told ehr that I thought that many Asian people considered that term somewhat offensive. She told me she had been Asian her whole life and never heard that.

So is it or isn't it. I am being sincere here so please...

I thought it was Filipina?

And as a Chinese friend always says, Oriental is a rug.

Well I normally say Pinay... but what the hell do I know.. Sadly my wife speaks Tagalog, Cebuano and much better English than I do.

People always ask me, does your wife speak English ? How did you communicate

I always said, you tell her typing.. The English words are spelled correctly and the grammar is perfect.

In the past, some of your statements are offensive. The list goes on. But, I never mind what you say. (You are free to talk here). It is posible you offended her. YES IT IS. The question is: Are you up to Opoligizing? Now, you be yourself.. What is made in fun to one person is different than the person the statement was aimed at. Either your ego will reply or OK I See..

I think that Asian is the term for people and Oriental is the term for things from that part of the world. At least that is what my Chinese friend told me.

Perhaps is related to time, timing, something historical?

ie - my great Aunts would say 'oriental' in describing a person, never 'Asian' ... that was about 60 years ago.

I remember some historical stuff, where 'Oriental' meant Turkey.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

Yah. Oriental used to refer to the near east - Oriental Express. Anything that came by way of the east was oriental, whether it was spices, silk, or philosophy. One of the hazards of living in a Eurocentric world, where everything is measured relative to the Greenwich Meridian. The opposite of oriental is occidental.

yup, them be the days.

I not notice when 'Oriental' stopped being a label and not notice when/if the PC crowd stomped it. I dunno ..

My BF is Korean-American. He says he's not a rug or a flavour of ramen noodles. He's Asian and he'd probably call you an ignorant f^ck if you said he was an Oriental.

Yup, noted, tagged as 'current' and even understood! But still, trying to remember _when_ it stopped being used.
