If English was the national language people would be forced to learn it, to speak it. There would be English tests and requirements before getting visas...

That would suck, wouldn't it? If that were the case, then we could visit only countries whose national language we are able to speak. My wife would no longer be able to accompany me to Germany and I would no longer be able to accompany her to Ethiopia. My traveling opportunities would be severely limited. Bad idea. Why would you want to tie a visa to the ability to speak a language?

One in three Americans want Christianity as official state religion

Scary to think that the American Taliban has that much support.

I should have specified. Immigrant visas or visas where people need to live here for a time (eg student visas). Obviously not visitor visas.

My ex-bf was Malaysian/Indian. When he went to Australia on a student visa he had to pass English requirements before getting the visa.

Maybe not for a tourist visa, but for residency, and for naturalisation, where's the downside?

Don't interrupt me when I'm talking to myself

Why on earth shouldn't there be an official language? Official languages make sense. It is already unofficially English but I'd be willing to be if they ever picked an official language it'd actually be TWO, English and Spanish.

I think English should be the official primary language though as it is the predominant and unofficial language of the US anyway.

Let me understand.

There should be no official language and if there is it should be English and Spanish

Followed by-- I think English should be the official primary language as it is predominant.

Are you a congressman or a Senator.... ??

i said "Why on earth SHOULDN'T there be..." not should. I also didn't say it SHOULD be English and Spanish, i said if they picked a National language now "I'd be willing to be bet if they ever picked an official language it'd actually be TWO, English and Spanish" (correction of typo added) but that "I think English should be the official primary language though as it is the predominant and unofficial language of the US anyway."

These number (only 2/3) don't think is a good idea must send shivers up the spine of some.

Think about it, with no promotion, no one even talking about it (that I have heard) .......and yet a full one third say yup.... we have an official flag why not an official faith.

:wow:

Just imagine if this concept had the support of a force like HollyWood as it does for alternative marriages.... making movies promoting it

committing a large percentage of programing to promote it, complete with endless spokes persons

praising the wonders if it and shaming those who don't support it...... how long would it take to change the numbers to 2/3's for it?

You're kidding right? 400 years free of religious persecution and now we think we want to put the church back in charge? I think not.

First of all, having an official faith comes with no authority anymore than Naming Nascar the official sport would mean much.

Also unless you have been asleep, we have had de facto Christian rule in this nation since it's inception, so far we only attribute like 19 dead to show for it (Salem) and that was like what 400 years ago.

Name me a country that can match that record.

-----------------------------------

Our first national document.

MAYFLOWER COMPACT.

In the name of God, Amen. We, whose names are underwritten, the loyal subjects of our dread Sovereign Lord King James, by the Grace of God, of Great Britain, France, and Ireland, King, defender of the Faith, etc.

Having undertaken, for the Glory of God, and advancements of the Christian faith and honor of our King and Country, a voyage to plant the first colony in the Northern parts of Virginia, do by these presents, solemnly and mutually, in the presence of God, and one another, covenant and combine ourselves together into a civil body politic; for our better ordering, and preservation and furtherance of the ends aforesaid; and by virtue hereof to enact, constitute, and frame, such just and equal laws, ordinances, acts, constitutions, and offices, from time to time, as shall be thought most meet and convenient for the general good of the colony; unto which we promise all due submission and obedience.

In witness whereof we have hereunto subscribed our names at Cape Cod the 11th of November, in the year of the reign of our Sovereign Lord King James, of England, France, and Ireland, the eighteenth, and of Scotland the fifty-fourth, 1620.[12]

-----------

Yeah I know we like to believe the myth that those folks came here to flee religious oppression ... when the truth is closer to what history records... they came to establish a faith..... and it has given more freedom to more people than any other system.

When you put it that way, I think a very large majority would agree, but thats not what is being discussed.

First off, we haven't been a country for 400 years. Start counting at July 3, 1776 for when we first declared our independence from King George.

Second, what does the Mayflower compact have to do with anything? I have ancestors in America that date back to Jamestown, and guess what they would tell you, if they could -- Somebody was already living here at the time.

And third, this:

Huh? You have been following the story, have you!
