Hello,

We checked yes on the DS-230 Part 2 Page 4 of 4 where it says, "Do you want the Social Security Administration to assign an SSN and issue a card?". We are here in the U.S. and when we went to the SSA office before 10 days they said we should wait for the 10 business days and come back. He also mentioned something about it processing or a work permit or something that we might get in the mail...

We got here on a Sunday 17th of March and it's April 4th. Today we stopped by the SSA office again and told them we hadn't gotten a card or anything in the mail. They reconfirmed that it looks like someone file for my fiance's work permit or something already and we have to wait for it to come in before applying for the SSN.

So, people of visa journey, does anyone have experience with this? Do we wait? We need to get married. I hear it takes 3-4 months to get the EAD work permit and if that's really what's being processed (I doubt it but the ssa guy said it so...) then it seem like we should cancel it somehow yea? In Nebraska I think the SSN is required to get married. Do other states that require SSN accept the "A" (alien) number or do we have to figure out how to get the SSN?

It's the waiting and lack of information that's killing us. We're sitting here watching a time limit tatoo'ed on her forehead tick down while we do nothing and people tell us to wait ...for something but we don't know how long. I'm going to call the county clerk tomorrow and see if they'll accept the A number and I'll update back here.

  :(

K-1 cannot be given an SSN on entry to the USA you check the No box.

You have to apply for your own ssn after entry to the USA at the SS office 2 weeks after entry.

Your I-129f was approved in 5 days from your NOA1 date.

Your interview took 67 days from your I-129F NOA1 date.

AOS was approved in 2 months and 8 days without interview.

ROC was approved in 3 months and 2 days without interview.

So what do we do? We checked yes and even if they ignored it it has still been almost 3 weeks and the guy at the SS office still says someone applied for something for us and we have to wait for it before he can do anything. He thinks it's a work card or something. I'm not convinced he knew exactly what it was we were waiting for but he was pretty sure he couldn't do anything until it came or finishes.

Did you apply for an EAD with the AOS forms? That might be why but you still will not get an SSN unless you go down to the SS office and fill out the forms to get an SS card.

Also - Nebraska does not require an SSN to get married. Got married here without it all they wanted was my passport and birth cert.

We just got here on Sunday March 17th. We took a multi-stop flight that hit Guam first (POE) and they took our papers. We came to Nebraska and all we've done is visit the SS office twice in the last 2 and a half weeks (the last time being today business day 14). We've filed no papers, not yet married, no ssn, no nothing. it's just the two of us sitting here thinking something's not right.

If that's the case, I guess tomorrow we'll just drive over there and get the license and stuff. My friends here keep telling me it's required.

She needs just a copy of her birth cert right? Or does she only need the passport?

Its not required, birth cert and passport only. Immigrants are not required to show SSN. Your friends are wrong lol there were 4 other Mexican couples applying the day we went and none of them had SSN either lol.

They had a 24 hour wait time before getting married after getting the license. I literally arrived in Nebraska after 4 days of driving and then got married the next day.

You just use the K-1 visa/passport, birth cert and marriage cert when you go to the SS office and hand the SS form papers over to them. They put you in the system and you should get the SS card in the mail a few weeks later. K-1 is legal alien allowed to work on the SS forms.

Also - just to further that, we live in Omaha as well and used the court house downtown Omaha to get our license and get married in.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !
Ya know, you can find the answer to your question with the advanced search tool, when using a PC? Ditch the handphone, come back later on a PC, and try again.

Well it was just more of work friends. But I'll tell them they were wrong. Also the advanced search I didn't notice, that'll come in useful soon I'm sure.

They spelled her name wrong too, they put her middle name in with her first name "SisaMoana" instead of Sisa Moana. The SS office guy told us that when we were there the first time.

Should we just let it slide until some later less time sensitive date to change it?

Here's what I'm thinking right now:

1) Friday (...today) - go get marriage license and schedule marriage for asap.

2) Either CBP to fix the name or Back to the SSA office again...but this time I'll just print what to ask them from the SSN howto and bring it.

The ss office guy seemed pretty convinced he couldn't do anything and had to wait for something to get mailed to us or something...

You think the SSN howto k1 instructions will get him on the right track?

(if you suggest the CBP fix thing is this the right location?)

A K1 doesn't do part 2 of the DS-230. Those questions on page 3/4 are for other visas like IR1/CR1 spouse visas who are eligible to receive a SSN assigned to them by checking the form. That is probably why the first confusion at the Social Security office.

ya, get to CBP to fix stuff. can't get 'through' at SSA until things match from a CBP fixing.
