The envelope was intended to prevent a special machine from reading the electronic info on the card. you can keep using it but unless you very unlucky or a special target it's a very low risk of someone stealing the info.

You can keep the card inside to prevent this if you like. there is not concern of the card being changed.

I use it so it doesn't get scratches on it etc.

Yep, me too. It was in the back pocket of my wallet and I think in 3 years, I took it out twice.

My husband used the envelope and carried it in his wallet for three years. He turned it in at his oath ceremony, the day he became a USC.

By the way, congratulations on your new card. Have you looked at all the holograms on the back side? Pretty cool.

Yes I do... well I don't carry the card (it's almost time to hand it over hopefully for USC so I don't want to lose it) but the card is in it, and stays in it.

It's to prevent people from being able to read it. There are some devices that can read the data on the card, just like they can read credit cards, and that would be a security issue.

Leave it with the rest of your important papers somewhere safe. Carry an enlarged photocopy of it instead. It is only in a few states a police officer may ask of your immigration status anyways.

You can read more about unauthorized reading of electronic chips here; http://travel.state.gov/passport/passport_2788.html#Twelve
