As to be expected, liberal-left websites and commentators leapt to the president’s defense, assuring the public that there is nothing extraordinary in EO 13603 and nothing to be alarmed about. Snopes.com, for instance, said the executive order “was simply a minor updating of a similar order issued by President Bill Clinton in 1994 (which itself had decades-old predecessors) and amended several times since.” The Snopes entry cited an Ed Morrisey column at Hotair.com, who insists “This EO simply updates another EO (12919) that had been in place since June 1994, and amended several times since.” It also cited a Doug Mataconis column at outsidethebeltway.com, who echoed Morrisey, chiding that “the Executive Order itself is nothing more than a restatement of policy that has been in place for decades.”

There is some truth there, but it should actually be more troubling than comforting, if one treasures freedom. Much of the same exact wording concerning the claimed power of federal agencies to “allocate” all food, water, energy, transportation, etc. does indeed appear in President Clinton’s EO 12919 of June 3, 1994. And Clinton’s order also uses the term “in peacetime and in times of national emergency,” although the phrase “under both emergency and non-emergency conditions” is unique to Obama’s EO 13603.

why should these terms be more troubling? i don't get it.

i mean, drones for gods sake!

Drones could be a problem, if for no other reason than you are increasing the number of things in the sky that could collide with other things in the sky, and/or fall out of the sky.

However, rationing and controlling all essential goods and products when there in no national emergency should at least require the consent of the people through their Representatives and Senators in Congress.

methinks it's bout time for an impeachment inquiry. Who cares what the outcome should be, but at least start the inquiry, aye?

Wartime and peacetime does seem to apply to national emergencies only. Clarifying non-emergencies would seem to expand that power.

peacetime wasn't considered a non-emergency? seems like they're saying the same thing.

It is a year old issue that failed to gain traction in an election year. I doubt anything will happen here. The main brunt of the article is to question the President's ability to tamper with the midterm elections, if for no other reason than to bring public awareness to the issue. Bring up something from 2012 is just to lay a foundation for building a case for the folks on the right that don't really need any convincing at all that Obama is out to get them, after he takes away all their guns and ruins their marriages.

Peacetime emergencies, where certain goods may be in short supply - the Carter gas rationing, for instance.

oh come on, being Partisan hasn't worked so far, right? Bring on the impeachment inquiry, else it stays just as boring for the next 3 years.

so a peacetime emergency is a non emergency? i should give up.

I think we both are lost in the terminology the other is using. Peacetime emergencies are emergencies, is all I am trying to say. If it doesn't have any urgency, it is a non-emergency, and I would think Congress should do their jobs, instead of letting the President do it for them.
