Let me address this one at a time:

Himher/Danno: Here's a lesson for you. Black folks don't want to be separate but equal. This prom wasn't the black kids idea, they want to be around their white classmates. At one point in history, Malcolm X preached about a black nation separate from white folks when he first started out. When he went to on his Mecca, and saw white muslims, his vision changed. He then embraced racial harmony and wanted both races to live in peace side by side. And that has been the focus ever since. There is no black only anything. BET was created because black musicians couldn't get video time anywhere else, MTV said we are a rock and roll orientated program. And it's also ran by Viacom, which is white owned. That's the difference, if it's majority black, whites and other races can still join. If anything was created exclusively for black people, it's because we were kept out of whatever it was.

So you are ok with the congressional black cacus who in 2007 turned down membership rep. Steve Cohen because he was not black, even though his district was 60% black and he felt it would help him represent the needs of the black community ?

Once again I am all for the integrated prom, I would be there if I was a student. I also support the rights of a private group of citizens to associate with whomever they please. You are dead wrong. Black America wants it black only when it works for them, and integrated when it works for them. Why will the CBC not admit whites.

A black girl won prom queen and couldn't even have her picture taken with the prom king for the yearbook because he was white and at a different prom she was not allowed to go to.

Nope, I think any group that discriminates against someone is wrong. I had to do some reading about Mr. Cohen since I was unaware about his situation. He is clearly qualified to be in the group. Let me be clear so no one can twist my words. If you form a group to focus on a specific problem, you want folks that can contribute to that mindset. If Mr. Cohen never worked around black folks, then I could see why they would turn him down. But since that's not the case, he should be let in.

And contrary to popular belief, blacks just want to be treated like everyone else. You might be older than me, but I've live with being black every single day. I've been all over the world and the US, I can't speak for the entire race, and neither can you. There might be some that want to just be around other blacks, just like we know there are some that don't want anything but white.

After digging into this a little more, it seems that basically there is no "School Prom" per se, since it is not being sponsored or held at the school. Basically some folks got together and and decided they would do their own school prom on private property and didn't invite any of the black kids. If any black kids showed up, they would be asked to leave, and if they refused to do so, the police would be called and they would probably be given a ticket or arrested for trespassing.

While I agree that the people doing this are racist pr!cks for holding this whites only party or prom or whatever, they are within their rights to do this. Personally I think this thing will take care of itself.

People should not be treated differently based on race period. That goes for affirmative action as well. There should not be any NAACP or La Raza, or black voting districts, or Hispanic voting districts. All that does is separate people further. You can't have it both ways. You can't expect special treatment due to your race and then b!tch because people treat you differently because of your race. Never gonna work.

I personally wish they would make everyting equal across the board, but it's never going to happen. You know why?

Because people in general will always discriminate agaisnt someone who isn't like them. Now your personal preference is yours alone, but if you want to get rid of all the above mentioned programs, here's what needs to happen first:

People with ethnic names like Jamal or Brianna who have degrees and qualifications should get the same looks as Paul or Jane.

When teens commit murders, they're murderers, not thugs(black) and misguided teens(white)

When shootings happen in the urban areas, they make the news, not after someone shoots up a white neighborhood

When a teenager who smokes weed, walks home and gets killed because someone decided to follow him even though he was doing nothing wrong, get the same legal treatment if the races were reversed

And when folks stop using blanket terms to describe a whole race of people, I find it funny that we are described as criminals and violent animals because as some on here would point out, 90% of crime in some areas are committed by black people, but the GOP is over 90% white, they've had so many racist, homophobic, sexist, comments coming out, yet you can't say all Republicans are this way. Catholic priests that are pedophiles are mostly white, but they don't share the same stigma. Look on this board, this story was about an integrated prom, and while most of the people here showed their support or disgust at the racism, a few just had to complain about black people, even though the article said nothing about blacks wanting thier own prom.

The issue here is not whether it is legal for the private segregated proms to occur, since they are most certainly legal. It is whether it is moral to support segregated proms. The legal and the moral do not always coincide.

Unfortunately I have to agree with Danno to a point. I may not like what you say, but I have to defend your right to say it, no matter how messed up it might be. That's the beauty of Democracy.
