We have the opportunity to possibly move to Hawaii. I was curious how the job situation would be for my wife for a general job there? How are the costs for housing within 30 minutes of Honolulu airport? Heard from a few that everything is incrediably expensive lately. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Does she speak Ilocano? If she does than no problem getting a job. But still it depends on her job skills and education level. I live on Kauai, so I am not to sure about Oahu. It is about 800 to 1500 for rents here. If you don't mind living with other Filipinos, than it can be cheaper. It is just that things cost alot more here esp gas and electric. Also she may adapt easier to the Asian culture here than you, so that can be a concern as well.

One cold Minnesota winter and you're talking bailing on the state and moving to a tropical island.

Yes, a very high percentage of Filipinos on the islands are Ilocano. In fact, there are many who don't know Tagalog, but can speak Ilocano.

And yes it would be beneficial...island mentality, etc.

Inital costs can be daunting, esp. the cost of housing. Don't expect large houses/land area for alot of money. Gas can be expensive. but like most places, once you get to know the area, you can learn to either deal with the costs or find cheaper alternatives for things.

Yes, lot's of Iloconos. They first started coming to Hawaii to work the pineapple and sugercane plantations, then when the Marcos'es were in power alot moved to Hawaii then too, heck when they got kicked out of the Philippines, they moved to Hawaii.

The closer to town(Honolulu), the more expensive is the cost of living(Oahu is the 3rd expensive place to live in the whole US).. were from Ewa Beach but just a short drive to airport. for jobs there's a lot of opportunity.

Panda Express is a very good company to work for. We had several filipina's over the other night that came from Hawaii and worked there. Pay and benefits is off the charts. They said in general that most everyone they knew there had a job and was doing well. They did say the cost of living was high in Honolulu.

Are you sure you would like living there?

I mean, it's nice for vacation, but I don't like that the "good ole boys" network is in full effect there, and when you need to get things done, it's like everyone that you have to deal with to take care of business rode "the short bus" in their youth...if you catch my drift.

Good question and I get your drift. Not sure if I will like it.. But Inwill be working alot and if we don't like it I can always leave. The wife said she likes the idea of the weather.. I have only been to the airport a few times so I don't know if I will like it..
