hello folks

my husband and i are getting ready to file taxes, the tax consultant reviewed our case and suggested that we file married, but separately, in order to secure a better refund, we really need the money right now, my worries is, is this a good idea seeing that i will be removing conditions on my green card in 2014? is it a requirement to file jointly for immigration purposes? i really dont want to do anything that will jeopardise my greencard journey

Married joint usually gets you more money not married sep. For the last 4 years when we did our taxes joint has always given us much more than sep. Its not required to file joint for immigration but it is highly favorable to file that way because they will question why your not filing taxes jointly.

Filing married jointly will give you a better refund vs filing married separately.. And also that will give you solid evidence if your taxes are filed jointly when apply to remove conditions on your greencard..

Well, she wrote that filing separately gives better refund, why don't you trust her and try to actually answer the question ?

It all depends on how much you make, which tax bracket you're in, what were your withholding and deductions you have, 2nd year in a row we are getting higher refund funding separately - yes this is possible and quite normal. I will be filing RoC later this year so I don't know what the impact is, but everything I've read so far said it's irrelevant. Why would tax filing status had anything to do with relationship being bona fide ?

my husband owed some student loan back before i even met him, the tax consultant said if we file jointly, the money that we should get for our baby will go to the loans, we have a 4 month old

Filing jointly doesnt always give you a bigger refund. I filed with my husband and we owe because of his unemployment last year. Had i filed alone, i would get back a few hundred dollars. I need solid evidence for immigration when ROC so we ended up filing jointly....
