Hackers hit back at Falklands war game

UK computer hackers have attacked an Argentine video game in which players shoot British “terrorists” who are trying to take over the Falkland Islands.

Developers dattatec.com sparked outrage this week by releasing the online game which imagines that Argentina has retaken the islands and features battles set in capital Port Stanley’s cathedral and military cemetery.

Players take the role of Argentine police fighting off a “British terrorist cell”.

But British hackers hit back, according to the games firm, using 5,000 computers to overwhelm its systems with useless data.

Spokesman Fernando Llorente said: “Generally these attacks come from eastern Europe and China. But we detected that most of the IP addresses used this time were from the UK.”

So, what kind of "British terrorist cell" were the Argentine police fighting off?

This version of the popular online game takes place in an alternate world in which Argentina won the war, and its police are defending the islands from British "terrorists".

"Our intention was not to offend anyone, but we believe that it helps raise awareness about an important issue," said Fernando Llorente, spokesman for Dattatec, the Rosario-based company that created the game.

"We are having very good feedback on the project," he said.

The game includes depictions of real sites on the main island, including the cemetery, the post office, the office of the daily Penguin News, and the main church and bank.

Argentine "police" begin the game in the cemetery, while the British are based in Port Stanley, or Puerto Argentino to the Argentines. Also in the game: a large sign that says, "The Malvinas are Argentine," describing the archipelago by the name used across Latin America. Llorente said there were no British flags in the game "out of respect" for Argentine war veterans.
