Regardless of whether or not the murder rates in Chicago skyrocket in the warmer months (and they will go up) ... you'd think that the implementation of these programs and beefing up the police presence on the streets would be treated as a good thing. They're attempting to fix part of their problem. Not make complete changes overnight. Chicago's in too big of a mess for that. But they're taking the steps in what I think is the right direction - providing opportunity and structure to kids who otherwise wouldn't have it.

And yet instead of focusing on that, there are a select few (the usual suspects) who are so focused on attempting to prove that these changes are useless and not worth the time or money spent on them.

It's almost as if they've given up and now kind of root FOR the violence to continue. Because all it does is "prove" their points about gun control, the black community, etc.

It's sad, but predictable. Terrible news out of Chicago is posted here so often, it's their go-to city when it comes to their arguments ... and finally some positive, encouraging numbers come out of it ... and instead, we're going to keep spamming the negative numbers and ignore any progress that's ATTEMPTING to be made.

I think the point is that no one knows if these are steps in the right direction, or whether these measures have anything to with the murder rate going down for a month. I agree, less people murdered is a good thing. It's too small of a sample size to consider it a trend. As others have pointed out simply taking measures does not mean they work. See "war on poverty"

I know all these after school and jobs programs give liberals warm fuzzies, and make them feel good about themselves while they live in their suburban paradise, but I'd like to see some proof.

It doesn't make me feel good about MYSELF, at all. It has no direct impact on my life in any way.

Regardless of where the numbers end up, I don't see how the programs being discussed could be a BAD thing for the youth in that city.
