The numbers, of course, will go up. But if these programs are working, then hopefully the number remains lower than it was last year. Giving kids something to do that will actually give them some life skills to work with is excellent.

It's easy to get in trouble when that's their only option. Peer pressure at a young age is a b*tch. Mix that with low income, low education, low opportunity ... it's a recipe for disaster.

I hope these kids are getting something useful out of these programs. Not only will it take up their time, it'll give them somewhere to go and somewhere to actually work with people their age in a POSITIVE way.

And it would be excellent to give some adults some of these same life skills. It would have the makings for a win win situation.

If you'd like to talk about programs that are encouraging youth to do something with their free time rather than run around on the streets causing problems, then please do!

I'd simply like to see some actual evidence that these youth programs have anything to do with it, other than a few politicians serving their own interests saying so.. One month when the temperature is freezing cold is not evidence.

Nobody in the article said "The crime is down and this is why.."

All it said was that there are currently more police on the streets and more programs available for youth. They discuss the weather as well. All it is is some encouraging numbers that may last and may not. But it could be a move in the right direction for that city. The numbers will go up in warmer months. But who knows if they'll go up to where they were last year..

January, as stated in the article, was the deadliest January in a decade in Chicago. And it was cold.

Last night, violence erupted all across the city, with 17 shot and two dead. One of the shootings took place in our neighborhood, at approx. 3:30AM on the 2100 block of N. Maplewood, per this Tribune report. The victim, believed to be a 19-year-old female, suffered a graze wound and was taken to St. Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center in good condition, according to the Tribune.

According to Officer Bethishou in the 14th District Office, “The young lady is in good condition. She had a graze wound. We cannot disclose any more information because it is still under investigation.”

Due to restructuring, Area North Detectives are looking into the incident. The region used to be called Area 5.

UPDATE: Per Officer O’Brien in CPD News Affairs, the shooting occurred at 3:23AM, the victim is 19 years old, and was shot in the breast. She is in good condition. According to a report from the victim, she was traveling in a car along with her boyfriend, near Division and Campbell, driving eastbound toward Western, when they realized a black SUV was following them. They turned north onto Western, and the shots, fired from the SUV, which had followed them, occurred near 1500 N. Western. They drove to 2100 N Maplewood, and it was in front of a building a few doors north of 2100 N. Maplewood where police took the report.

When The Pipeline mentioned to Officer O’Brien that we’d heard from an individual who spoke with an eyewitness who had seen the car turning right out of the CVS parking lot and onto 2100 N. Maplewood, as well as from someone else who lives near the 2200 block of N. Maplewood and said his wife heard what “sounded like firecrackers,” O’Brien replied that this information was provided by the victim, the shooting is believed to be gang related, and Area North Detectives will continue to investigate.
