Rapists are rapists. There really aren't certain levels of rape that take into account what you were doing at the time of the rape.

Hypothetically speaking, even if there were different levels, both crimes in Ohio and Rio fall under the same category: Being at the wrong place at the wrong time, which oftentimes is the case with any crime.

In Ohio a woman went to a party which was also attended by criminals. Many women go to parties or bars and drink on daily basis. The differential here is not the woman, so much as the criminals who decided to rape her.

In Rio, these tourists were in a perfectly normal means of transportation. One of my sisters is married to a Brazilian and has lived in Rio for many years. I have used the mini-buses several times and never felt I was in danger nor saw anything to suggest I should be. Thousands of women use the minibus as a means of transportation, daily. Again, the differential here is not the victim.

Trying to justify rape in any way, shape or form is obscene. Rape is rape.

A man and a woman get drunk in a bar, leave and have sex. In many states this is rape because the woman is considered too drunk to consent. If she wakes in the morning and regrets having sex, she can report a rape and the man will be charged. Doesn't really matter if the man was just as drunk. Is there no shade of grey in this case?
