I am writing this for a close friend who's English is not that great. Here is the situation briefly:

Grandmother (naturalized US citizen) is petitioning for her son and his family to immigrate from Pakistan. She filled out the I-130 for her son and listed his wife and 3 children on his application. Then, someone at the local YMCA helping her told her she needed to file an I-130 for each member of his family, so 4 more I-130s.

Long story short we know that those were unnecessary now. She was unaware that she could only petition for her son. So my question is two parts: 1)How do we go about cancelling the 4 superfluous I-130s and 2)Is there any chance of getting the application fees refunded. At $400/each roughly that's $1600; I know she's not flush with money, she is old and retired.

Any help is greatly appreciated, thank you!

If the checks have been cashed there is no refund, if they haven't she could issue a stop payment on the extra ones and that will cause the money to be refunded. To cancel the petitions she needs to write USCIS to cancel. Make sure she cancels the correct ones. Carefull read the case numbers on the noticed if she has gotten them.

This will not be over quickly. You will not enjoy this.

Okay, I think she sent them not too long ago, last month. Will see if they haven't been cashed yet. And yes she received notices with the receipt/case numbers so we will be sure that her son's is not cancelled. Thank you for your help!

If she got the notices, the checks most likely have been cashed.
