Translating a Japanese Koseki

Hi all,

Getting close to the end, but want to make sure we're doing things correctly before sending in my wife's DS-230. We're translating her koseki using the US Embassy's form located on their website, but are not sure what to put in the second half of the form. Unfortunately, my wife is currently living in Japan and I am in America, so we cannot just sit next to each other and talk it through.

She's going to send me a picture of the koseki tomorrow, but in hopes of saving time, has anyone else used the Embassy's form? What did you put for the second group of Subject, Birth, etc. topics?

Any help is appreciated, and a very big thank you in advance!!

Is she mainland or Okinawa? I ask because we just had it translated. I could give you a place on Okinawa, but Mainland I dont know. I have not used the form from the embassy. I would say , due to them wanting so many copies of everything that, That your best bet for having them accept your paperwork the first time is to have professional translation as we did. No requests for more info that way....

Hi, i'm the foreign beneficiary and did ShoHon translation myself.

I don't know about the Embassy template but, this is the sample of my translation, FYI.

Let me know if you need any help.

Our lawyer in Tokyo recommends to have a third party, i.e. your friend, sign as translator and attach the attestation that the translation is correct in every detail. Notary isn't required for this.

• Feb 27, 2013 – NOA1 date (CSC)
• Mar 04, 2013 – NOA1 hardcopy in mail

• Aug 07, 2013 – NOA2 (161 days)

• Aug 10, 2013 – NOA2 hardcopy in mail

• Sep 04, 2013 – file sent out from CSC

• Sep 12, 2013 – NVC assigned TKY case #

• Sep 13, 2013 – file in transit to TKY from NVC

• Sep 16, 2013 – CEAC site case status "READY"

• Oct 21, 2013 – Interview at Tokyo Embassy, approved in 3 minutes (236 days since NOA1)

• Oct 21, 2013 – CEAC site case status "Administrative Processing"

• Oct 22, 2013 – CEAC site case status "Issued"

• Oct 23, 2013 – K-1 visa delivered at around noon

Thanks for the replies both of you! We ended up creating our own template based off of the Embassy's and a few I've found on VJ. There was no second section on the Koseki, so I think we're safe.

I wish I found this template before..I just made my own and tried to make the layout look exactly the same as the birth certificate XD

9/29/06 - Started dating my husband (LDR For 5 years after 6/07)
8/22/12 - Married in Japan
10/10/12 - I-130 Sent (Japan Post)
10/12/12 - Received at Chicago Lock Box
10/15/12 - NOA1(no email, had to call and find out and recieved the hard copy 10/22/12) case at NBC
12/14/12 - NOA2(no email once again,randomly checked it online)
01/07/13 - NVC Case Received
01/25/13 - Case Number assigned and AOS fee billed(somehow NVC didn't write down the proper emails for my husband and I )
3/06/13 - AOS invoice paid!(more like the 4th,when they withdrew the money!)
3/04/13 - DS-3032 email sent
3/13/13 - DS-3032 replied to
3/14/13 - IV invoice billed
3/16/13 - IV invoice bill paid
3/19/13 - NVC withdrew my money(waiting for the PAID STATUS)
3/24/13 - IV invoice officially paid
4/03/13 - Sent AOS and IV (without PCC....doh!) package via next day mail
4/04/13 - AOS & IV Package received
4/16/13 - AOS accepted(found out by phone april 17th)
4/17/13 - NVC wants PCC(found out via phone)CHECKLIST!
4/18/13 - Sent PCC with checklist (cover letter, etc) next day mail
4/19/13 - PCC delivered
4/30/13 - Case Complete(Lord, PLEASE!!! LET ME GET IT BY THE END OF APRIL!!) #### YEAH!
5/13/13- Interview date assigned & received Packet 4
5/16/13- Package left NVC for Tokyo(I assume it will get there in 3days)
5/20/13- Package delivered to Tokyo embassy
5/21/13- Medical
6/10/13- Interview at Tokyo embassytuzki-emoticon-030.gif APPROVED!!
6/x/13- Visa received
7/9/13- MY Hubby is coming to good ole Houston, TX

No problem,......Make sure on your DS-230, In the area that you list places lived since the age of 16, The start date should be the birthday of the individuals 16th birthday forward. Not from birth as you would think.

I know this now cause we got ours returned to us to correct due to this miniscule error.

The PDF form for the Koseki Tranlation ( 戸籍謄本 (Koseki Tohon)) is in PDF form, not editable and even has some incorrect English

Japan: Submit a certified copy of an extract of the family register (koseki) which shows the date and place of birth, as well as parentage. The family register must be accompanied by an English translation, certified by the translator. This document does not expire as long as the information remains correct. If the koseki does not show the birth place, please obtain the family register established at the time of birth (jyoseki shohon).

I made my own copy of the form here.

Should be easy enough to translate and just sign it yourself to certify the translation (or have someone bilingual do it)
