Hello people:

After the oath ceremony they recommend to go to the SSA office to update your social security and to apply for a passport as well.

What is better do to first: SSA update or get a passport?

And another question, does the SSA returns the naturalization certificate the same day you apply for the update or do they do the same thing as the passport office and mail you later the naturalization certificate??

Thanks!!!

They told us to wait 10 working days to go to the Social Security office as it would take a while for their computers to be updated. This was true for me- I went on day 11 and was not in the system yet; they took a photocopy of my naturalisation cert and gave me back the original.

This has to be your SS agent office dependent, just showed the naturalization certificate, wouldn't take my beautiful colored copy of it, but copied it on their dirty copy machine and handed it back. Took the properly filled out form signed by the applicant. I was not the applicant, took all but two minutes. Never checked that database that recently just started. Small town, out in the sticks, maybe they never heard about it.

Since I love to ask stupid questions, if was told would have to wait for a database, why would I still have to come in with a properly filled out form and the original certificate? If it is in the database, why can't they just issue a new SS card and mail it to us. With or without that database, still have to go in. One reason why I feel with are dealing with idiots.

And the same with the DOS, why do you have to send in your original certificate, then worry if you would ever see it again since they send it back via untraceable first class mail? Since your citizenship is now in a database. One key reason why I like to take care of SS first.

Again, dealing with idiots and paranoid ones at that.

Why did you ask this question? You can get a passport in with in 2 days if you are traveling and willing to pay additional money. You can apply for the SSA and they will mail the card to you but will not have it in the hand same day. If you tell us the reason for the question we can answer better.

I just read in some other threads that some people decided to update the info with the SSA and then applying to get the passport.

I was checking what is convenient for me.
