I was married in Brazil and my wife at the time was granted a CR-1 visa. We resided in Arizona and ended up divorcing in Brazil (Since that is where we were married) before the 2 year anniversary of the CR-1 visa. My questions are:

- Through the immigration process, is our international marriage registered anywhere in the U.S. or in the state that we live (Arizona)?

- Is it necessary to file divorce documents in the U.S. even though I was married and divorced in Brazil?

Thank you for any help!

Any marriage that takes place abroad is legal within the USA as long as it was legal done in the country where it happened. I'd imagine divorce would be the same way.

But is the marriage actually registered by the USCIS anywhere during the process? I was legally divorced in Brazil but I am asking to avoid any conflicts when trying to get married sometime in the future. I never personally registered my marriage here and did not file any divorce documents here as well.

Thanks for your earlier reply.

Like I said, as long as the marriage abroad is done according to the law of that country, it's automatically legal in the USA and thus you don't need to file it anywhere. The States doesn't keep a registry of marriages. I could be wrong, but I'm pretty positive that divorce works the same way. As long as it was done correctly in the country abroad, there's no need to do anything to make it legal in the States.

I think I am getting what you are saying. Even though if you went down to your courthouse in your city in US they won't have your marriage registered yes true. However part of the background checks USCIS and the Embassy does is in the country you are from and married and making sure you don't have other marriages listed and didn't note this.

I have seen too many times here on these forums people who didn't list previous marriages or divorces cuz they figured it didn't matter since it was in their country done so long ago.

If you were ever married before list it. If you ever divorced before submit your divorce decree.
