Social Security Card for CR-1 Visa

My husband arrived in the U.S. on February 14 and received his Green Card in the mail two or three weeks later. But no Social Security Card ever came, so I came on VJ and read that it was wrong of us to expect that checking the "Yes, send my a SSN" on the visa application would result in that actually happening! So, my husband went and applied and they told him he'd get the card within two weeks. It has now been three weeks.

Should we just go in and start over? I have seen a lot on here about what K-1 visa holders ought to do, but I'm unsure if what's happening in our case is par for the course for a CR-1 visa holder. Any advice is welcome and appreciated! Thanks.

He should go to the social security office and ask for his number. Even if the card itself isn't ready, they should be able to give him the number. But he has to go in person. He should bring his green card.

Majority of the family based visa beneficiaries receive their SS cards via mail (answered yes on the DS-230 form). It's not wrong to expect from our part because it is clearly stated in the DS-230 form that we will receive it. Sometimes, glitches happen. Their system is not perfect so there are times when people don't get their SS cards.

From our experience, my husband and our 3 kids received their SS cards via mail. The first card came 2 weeks after POE, then the other 3 cards 30 days after POE. They were under the F2B category.

A cousin of ours, also under F2B, did not receive her SS card. She went to the SS office and applied. It seems the DHS people at POE did not forward her application or something.

I would suggest your husband go back to the SS office (where he applied) and speak to the supervisor why he hasn't received his SS card yet.
