Medical questionaire and depression

Hi people,

I saw a few threads on this but didn't really get a clear answer on what I should do.

I have my medical coming up soon and obviously need to fill in the questionnaire. On the question regarding depression, I had mild postnatal depression when my son was born. It was nothing severe, just emotional, weepy etc, the normal symptoms some women get. My doctor prescribed me anti depressants but I never took them, he basically thought that was the best thing I should take even though I disagreed. I got through it with support of my friends and family and feel great now. Do I need to tick yes for this question and explain this if asked or should this not be mentioned. I want to be honest, I am just worried it will effect my visa.

Any answers will be appreciated.

Sinead

I think this is none of their business so I wouldn't put it at all but if you want to be honest, this shouldn't have any effect on whether you get your visa or not. Doctors want to prescribe more and more people just to make more and more money but if you got through it just like I did (without medication) then you never had depression you had post partum blues therefore there is nothing to put down.

It's not going to effect your visa; I had PTSD/ depression and took medication for 6 months and had counselling for a year, it had no effect. IF you had had a suicide attempt they would likely send you to a psychologist for an evaluation but even then you'll get the visa.

Thank you so much for your reply.

I always believe honesty is the best policy.

The doctor prescribed the anti depressants because of how long i was having the emotional feelings. I didn't take them because i knew it wasn't the answer. A lot of it was down to sleep deprivation and having a lot of stress.

I have had great support and relax, exercise more and every opportunity get sleep!

I will put on the questionnaire yes but will put a note with it explaining.

It will also help if you can get your GP to do a letter explaining the circumstances and stating that at no time were you a threat to yourself or anyone else.

With post partum blues I know this only lasts for a couple of weeks, where mine went on for a couple of months. Still, I got through it without medication which I am proud of. I will not tick a box and ask at the medical and see what they say.

You should always be honest. If it asks if you've had depression, and you have, tick yes. Explain it on a separate page as explained on the questionnaire form. I've had depression and my medical is yet to come. You will just need a note from your GP saying you are not a threat to yourself or others and you will not be in the future. It won't effect your visa, but withholding information and or/lying can have much more severe consequences.

Thank you Queen Of Blades.

The doctors know what I had was only mild and not severe depression so I can get the GP to write a note stating this. I had no bad thoughts or wanted to harm, I just felt generally low and got weepy a lot. I got through it without anti depressants.

Just felt really worried about and panicking that this would jeopardize everything after all the hard work. Most people who have answered on here say it shouldn't be a problem.

Don't worry about it. They won't turn down your visa for it. I'm a UK citizen and I had severe depression, have self harmed (it was many years ago and have had a long history of good mental health since then) and 1 suicide attempt in 2006. I'm getting my doctor to write me a note stating I'm not a harm to myself or anyone else and will answer the questionnaire honestly. I'd be more worried about being dishonest and hiding information than anything else. As long as I'm not a danger, that's all they care about. At worst, they'd make you see a psychiatrist but they won't turn down your visa for it. And with post natal depression without harm to yourself or suicidal thoughts, answer YES, explain what you've explained here and get a GP note, and it will likely be a complete non-issue.

I was thinking about this a lot and maybe I shouldn't tick a box and explain when I am having the medical. Can I do this, or do I have to tick a box prior the medical?

You can leave the box un ticked and you do not have to sign the form until you are in the presence of the Doctor at Knightsbridge this will most definitely give you the opportunity of talking to the Knightsbridge Doctor I did this with a couple of the questions.

One thing I would say that if your GP diagnosed you with "Depression" you are obliged to answer the question truthfully. Please don't forget that Knightsbridge can write to your GP to check any of your Medical History. If you do not tell them and they subsequently find your were not truthful it may cause problems. The reason I suggested getting your GP to do a letter ahead of time to take with you to your Medical and to get your GP to add that at "no time were you a threat to yourself or anyone else" is not only does it pre-empt Knightsbridge having to write to your Doctor to clarify how you were treated for your Depression and state of mind (which will add more time to this part of the process) but also that you are in fact being up front and truthful.

Also just to let you know when you get to Knightsbridge you will have another form to complete with similar questions.

Thanks KLB for your help.

I will see my GP this week and get her to write a relevant note regarding this. I was told that what i had sounded like postnatal depression and just assumed then tried prescribing me anti depressants. I didn't take because i knew it wasn't right for me.

I will be honest about this, i rather that than lie and face even worse, it's just not worth it. Plus i'm not ashamed of it, a lot of women have suffered with it.

On the medication question, do i have to put down the contraceptive pill i'm on?

If it was me I would list it.

Its easy for me to say now because I've had mine but really try not to stress too much about the medical ... I did, but tbh it wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be.
