... two B-2 Spirit bombers made a nonstop round trip from Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri, demonstrating the United States’ ability to “provide extended deterrence to our allies in the Asia-Pacific region” and to “conduct long-range, precision strikes quickly and at will,” the American command in the South Korean capital, Seoul, said in a statement.

It was the first time the American military publicly confirmed a B-2 mission over the Korean Peninsula. As the bombers dropped inert munitions that they carried 6,500 miles over the Pacific to an island bombing range off South Korea’s west coast, Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel conferred with his South Korean counterpart, Kim Kwan-jin, on the phone, reaffirming the United States’ “unwavering” commitment to defend the South.

...

A news release from the South Korean Defense Ministry on Thursday said that the “extended deterrence” Mr. Hagel reaffirmed for South Korea included “nuclear umbrella” and “missile defense capabilities.”

Why would we carpet bomb South Korea?

They're doing drills over South Korea. The bombing will be of N Korea if it comes to it.

It's not about South Korea. The US is in South Korea doing joint military drills this month. This is in response to North Korea cutting the last military hotline with South Korea yesterday therefore nullifying armistice with South Korea. Thus signifying an escalation in their line of nuclear threats towards the West in response to the recent UN sanctions put on North Korea because of their nuclear weapons program. Yada, yada, yada. Until North Korea actually shells the island they shelled last time it's just a high alert. Nobody thinks North Korea is capable of more or would actually do more than provocation.

So in response to the US show of force by flying two stealth bombers over South Korea the North Korean's ready their rockets.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un signed off on the order at a midnight meeting of top generals and "judged the time has come to settle accounts with the U.S. imperialists in view of the prevailing situation", the official KCNA news agency said.

KCNA said North Korea and the United States could only settle their differences by "physical means". The North has an arsenal of Soviet-era short-range Scud missiles that can hit South Korea but its longer-range Nodong and Musudan missiles, which could in theory hit U.S. Pacific bases, are untested.

Source

If it actually comes to "physical means" then it's fairly certain North Korea wouldn't withstand long. That's not saying North Korea wouldn't do some damage though. A direct hit to Seoul would hurt the world economy. Hitting US bases in Japan, Guam and Hawaii would be a first if Kim Jong-un did indeed sign off on those locations for the missile strike.

Problem is, the Chinese haven't sold the NK GPS technology yet.

Problem is, the Chinese haven't sold the NK GPS technology yet.

Isn't that what Rodman was doing there?

Reports this morning have US officials saying NK is "no paper tiger" and is to be taken seriously. Earlier missile tests last year had NK missiles dropping into the sea pretty close to Seoul. If Kim Jung-un wants to make a statement about his leadership in retaliation to UN sanctions squeezing NK financially and figures they have nothing to lose at this point then hitting Seoul, SK would get that point across and be felt through out the world financially as well. It would be like saying you may think we're insignificant, impotent. incapable, isolated and ignorant, but we're all apart of the larger picture and connected in more ways than you realize. "Squeeze us and make us hurt? See that - we can make you all hurt too."

As for the missile targets on their map it's a couple different angles. The text reads "plan for striking US mainland" (미본토타격계획) The map shows LA, DC, Hawaii and possibly Austin as being primary targets. Why Austin and why show where you plan to strike?

Most analysts agree North Korea would not be able to hit any US mainland targets.

I was reviewing the history of the Korean War this morning which they scraped armistice with us over. That was no drop in the bucket. We may have more sophisticated weaponry than them and the regime may well collapse but China and the Soviet Union also were involved.

Recently China has said to North Korea stop it kiddo - while Russia has said to the US stop it you bullies. Your military activities in the region are causing this vicious cycle and unnecessary escalation. Basically they're saying we're doing it to ourselves. You're the bigger guys stop picking a fight with the littler guy.

Exactly !

USA is keeping it's part of the agreement. I am proud about it.

And what agreement would that be?

That we are paying security for S. Korea ... to protect them from their norther neighbor who is much smaller in populations has an economy with is but a fraction of S. Korea.

Perhaps the US needs help protecting it's self from Panama?

These are the "Entangling alliances" the founders warned us about.

Same thing in Europe: Why are 300 million Americans paying to defend 500 million Europeans from 150 million Russians?

And it's not just draining our treasury

we are also at risk of being drawn into war by all these treaties we get into, should war break out in any of these areas.

Q: Is South Korea of such a vital interest that you would send your son to die there tomorrow?

And it gets even more crazy.... think about this-

We relieve Europe's need to provide a real military and so without that cost hanging over their heads they have money for such things as socialized medicine and retirement at 50.

(yeah I know they are still going broke but follow me)

And then the LEFT over here want to know why we too don't have those "Rights" that the rest of the developed world enjoys.

IN the next two decades we are going to finally face that we are no longer the SUPER super power, and our while our name on a treaty does commit us to wars it will no longer prevent them.

The Big strong guy on the block, keeping the neighborhood peace has grown flabby, broke and his problems at home are consuming his attention

as they are now greater than the neighborhood problems.

I can tell you, as America declines, the whole world order shifts and nukes will either be the best friend the world has ever known or usher in Armageddon.

I tend to think the former. India and Pakistan have not made as much progress towards normalizing (relatively speaking) relations as they have since the days both countries "came out of the closet" as nuclear powers.

All the bellyaching over Iran getting a nuke pisses me off. They are Persians. These are a people with a civilization and culture as old as ours. When the Arabs (our allies) were savages roaming in the deserts, the Persians were a nation with a proud culture and history. Iran is not suicidal. They have too much to lose.
