Explain to me Smoke, how a word that was use to demorlize an entire race of people, that was used while people were hung in trees, drug on the back of trucks, murdered in the streets, and just to make someone feel less than human, is in the same vein as a word that means poor, uneducated, uncooth on it's worse day but southern, harworking, and spontanous at the same time. Because you can't put a positive spin on the N word. But you're welcome to try.

marvin you & noone you know were ever 'hung in trees, drug on the back of trucks, murdered in the streets, and just to make someone feel less than human'..get over what never happened to you.

when you call people redneck you are attempting to 'demorlize' white people by associating with 'poor, uneducated, uncooth' white people.

got it?

no?

think about when you use the term redneck.

you got it now don't you? its ok. i don't expect you to admit it.

So then a word is offensive no matter who says it. See how simple that is. If word is offensive it is offensive, period. Can't have it both ways. Having a hard time understanding why Marvin is one of the few people around here that gets that.

i disagree. and so does most of popular culture. we currently exist in a world that has it both ways. a nice ideal though.

As long as you keep having special rules for different races of people, there will never be true equality. Very simple really.

i would too. now search for NSFW other words in videos...go ahead. tell me how many you find. ;)

oh i don't need to. i'm well aware. and it doesn't offend me in the slightest to hear it in lyrics or in movies or standup. i was quite uncomfortable as a kid reading tom sawyer aloud in class, however.

And that's where you would be wrong. I have this thing called grandparents, my granddad is still alive, he's 94 years old. Now do the math, back in the 1920's guess what? They lynched black people all the time. Find that hard to believe? Well I wish you were here to talk to him, he loves to spread wisdom to anyone who listens. It's sad to hear him talk about coming to work and finding that word spelled on the wall with die n***** die, and this was the police station. Being in military was a whole different animal. He talked about having to sleep with one eye open because you could get drug out of bed and killed. But since you think I have no clue what that word means, I grew up in the 70's. I've been in the car with my parents when the cops pulled us over and called my Dad that and I couldn't understand why he was so angry since I was so young. I've been called that word by a girl's dad I had a crush on, this was back in 1989. I've been called that by my ex-wife's parents who were German, I've been denied service in Hong Kong, Korea, Sicily, and even some places here in the states just because I'm black.

And for your information when I said the word I meant a southern, county person. But I know all you won't see it that way. But on this board I have apologized when I was wrong, can you say the same thing? Or are you going to keep trying to fight a battle you know you can't win straight up?

Hey val, I love your open minded thinking on the topics here, but I disagree with black people owning the word.

I know they say it all the time and so many rappers use it, but I ask of you to please forgive their ignorance/stupidity. I am ashamed that we use the word that our parents and grandparents were called, and we have made it "cool" to say it. It will never be cool.

i know you disagree and sometimes that's just how it is. but please don't apologize for anyone who uses the word. i have my own history with that word, but that really doesn't matter here.

i believe that the offense is primarily generational. just as my parents had to explain what the word meant to me (out of fear), i've had to explain to my son and nephew why it isn't okay for them to say it because they hear it every day in the music they listen to and in movies/television. you say it isn't cool, and i know why it isn't. but for the younger generation - it already is cool, to them. i've had black preteens look me straight in the eye with bewilderment as to why their white friends can't use the word. they honestly do not know what the big deal is.

i can't say that all these kids are ignorant by choice. or using the word because they know how horrible it is but being cool is more important. that just isn't true. they're good kids. words do change meaning over time. thing is, there really isn't another word we can compare it to. there is no other word that holds so much. i will never be able to say that word, even in private, and not have my stomach in knots. i think that's true of the majority of older generations. but the younger ones? it's a completely different word..
