no it isn't. redneck is in no way comparative to the n word. sorry.

when its used to describe uneducated poor white people it is. no need to be sorry, you can be wrong occasionally.

cmon marvin. you've been removing the quotes for 11 minutes. pick it up & hit reply already.

my bet: you'd pull out the ole smart phone google something up & read it out loud without quoting the source.

redneck as you use it, is a slur. you knew it before your boss talked to you about it.

Actually no I didn't. Because I have never seen someone take offense when it has been called out. But let's play Danno's game shall we? If the word is so offensive, why does my boss identify himself as one? Why are there shirts, hats, bumper stickers that people buy? Why is there a line of jokes based on the word? I can't seem to find you might be a(fill in the blank for any racial slur) show on TV? Someone said there is a song called I am a redneck woman. So educate me, how is this word a derogatory term when an entire group of people identify with it? I forgot, isn't there a tv show called my big fat redneck vacation?

And before you go there, because I know between Danno, RHR, you and Himher, someone will say, well black people call themselves the n word all the time and there are shirts and hats with it on it. Those folks are ignorant and I can't fix stupid. But if you can find me a TV show that shows a racial slur in it, then I will concede the argument.

then its used incorrectly. saying someone is redneck is the same as saying someone is country. as evidenced in: redneck and proud type slogans. jeff foxworthy. countless country hits, proclaiming how awesome it is to be a hardworkin redneck.

if i wanted to describe an uneducated poor white person in a derogatory manner i would use, hick or bumpkin. and if i was black, i'd use cracker. redneck is not a slur.

history.

I'm just curious. Is there a govt. agency, or possibly some university somewhere that is keeping track of what is offensive to who? Like if a word is said to a member of this race to a member of of the same race, it is not offensive, but if used by a different race it is offensive? Is there a .pdf somewhere for the public to download? I think at one time mexican was ok, but now it's hispanic. Is Polack still ok, or is it just Pole or Polish now? Or are we not supposed to talk about it at all? Surely someone, somewhere is tracking this.

Whoever it is should release a yearly updated version so everyone knows what's P.C.

there are many words someone can find offensive. there is one word that is completely off limits to white people. one. no need for a government agency.

and yes. black people can say the word all they want. huge fan of nwa.

i don't know why everyone is so upset that there is ONE WORD that white people shouldn't use.

redneck used to be a derogatory word. but white people took ownership of it and made it something to be proud of, or a term of endearment. sound familiar?

I think people know what words are offensive, but due to folks taking the words and making them terms of endearments, it makes it hard to distinguish what's right and wrong. I know a few hispanics that like to call themselves the w word like we say the n word. I've said it once and I'll say it a thousand times, if you say it, anyone else can. You can't have outrage when you allow someone else to do it that looks like you.

So then a word is offensive no matter who says it. See how simple that is. If word is offensive it is offensive, period. Can't have it both ways. Having a hard time understanding why Marvin is one of the few people around here that gets that. I have no problem with a word being considered offensive. I just think it's B.S. when all kinds of special rules and disclaimers are brought into it. It's seems pretty black and white to me. (Forgive the pun)

Explain to me Smoke, how a word that was use to demorlize an entire race of people, that was used while people were hung in trees, drug on the back of trucks, murdered in the streets, and just to make someone feel less than human, is in the same vein as a word that means poor, uneducated, uncooth on it's worse day but southern, harworking, and spontanous at the same time. Because you can't put a positive spin on the N word. But you're welcome to try.
