When they say average processing time for the I-485 in one office takes X days, what are they measuring to and from? I guess from receipt to something, either interview or RFE or decision. Does anyone know? We are still waiting on our interview appointment and the processing time is coming up.

I don't know the right answer but I would say it's from the NOA date to the final decision... but if a RFE is issued, the period of time to answer depends on the applicant, not the USCIS.

The problem is that you may not be scheduled for an interview, and in that case, your case will never go to your local USCIS office. So it may be irrelevant to pay attention to your office's processing timeline. I see that your local USCIS office is Cleveland, OH. Take a look at the VJ data (members AOSing from a K-1 living around the Cleveland office) to have an idea of how long it may take: http://www.visajourney.com/timeline/aoslist.php?cfl=0&op1=3&op2=d&op4=1&op5=5,6,8,9,10,11&op8=Cleveland%20OH&xfr=&vtype=1

As you can see, some got an interview at Cleveland (for the more recent timeline, 8 months after their NOA!), and some didn't get an interview (their case were transferred and processed at CSC before August 1st 2012, or they are processed at NBC for the ones who applied after August 1st). In any cases, it seems that it will most likely be a pretty long wait before you get news on your case.

In resume:

- you may get an interview at the Cleveland USCIS office

- you may not get one, and your case will stay and be processed at NBC (pretty long wait).

 It really does vary alot - depending on your local office (if you get an interview) - usually quicker or if your petition stays at MSC (NBC) for processing without an interview -very long wait =there are still July and August filers waiting for approval :(

It means checking processing times is a waste of time.

There is no "processing time" except as a rough gauge of how long it takes to get a green card. Plus or minus a few months. You may not have an interview. The green card may just come in the mail.

Like everything else in the process it gets done when it gets done. We did ROC for Alla in 5 months and for Sergey it took 11 months. No RFEs, no interviews, same offices. Go figure.

I couldn't agree more!

Like Yogi Berra once said, "It ain't over, 'til it's over!" My wife and stepson's AOS took a little over 3 months to complete…. no rush, no expedite, no nothing, no RFEs, had interview (from hell)….. it just happened. We are counting our blessings… There is no rhyme nor reason….

Completed: K1/K2 (271 days) - AOS/EAD/AP (134 days) - ROC (279 days)
