Who said anything about "swooping in and fixing the welfare system" I'm simply stating that the fact that these 2 suspects were being raised in poverty on welfare by single mothers might have something to do with why this crime happened. I'm not making a blanket statement that ALL kids who's parents are on welfare are destined to become baby killers. I am simply wondering why some people refuse to look at the upbringing and family life of these alleged murderers.

i understand what you're saying. it would be silly to make a statement that all kids raised by welfare dependents will be baby killers or something equally horrendous. obviously, if that were true, we'd have a bunch more dead babies on our hands. i'm saying we know what symptoms of generational poverty are but we don't do anything to treat the root cause. a child brought up in a single parent home, no money, no future - of course they will have a rough time becoming an upstanding self reliant citizen. more than likely - they won't. further, they'll go on to raise children in the same environment as they came from. it isn't about refusing to look at these symptoms for what they are, it's about honing in to remove the root cause.

When did you arrive in America? I hope you are an immigrant. If not, our education system has once again failed miserably.

Good one. So an auto correct on an ipad means we have a failed education system. I guess my MBA is worthless because i had the auto correct turned on.

I agree with you there. There should be requirements tied to receiving welfare. Either looking for work, or job training, or whatever. There should be a limit on lifetime benefits. Simply giving people money for doing nothing except having more and more children, just breeds more poverty.

You bought an ipad? You're really not helping your case.

welfare is a complicated web. it's tricky, how do you take away food and housing from innocent children - because their parents aren't earning it? unless government is going to step in and start putting tons of children that no one wants into foster care..

i would like to see more money invested in community centers, job training, daycare & actual jobs. further, we need to get private money & profit out of the prison system. drug rehab instead of simply incarceration.

Ordering people to drug rehab in place of incarceration is a waste of time and money unless they want the help. If they truly want the help, than it is very effective. I know first hand, most don't want the help and simply go through the motions to satisfy their parole or probation officer or the judge. Which actually hurts the people in the program that truly want the help.

rehab is daunting when you can't afford a good program and there's no future once rehab is over. which is why many people argue that the war on drugs actually produces more addicts than it does anything else. i've had friends who have been in and out of rehab and prison, and you're right, they only got better when they decided to get better. however, the family support (jobs waiting, money for rehab/living expenses provided, children cared for and waiting at home, etc) is what made the real difference in my opinion. how much tougher is it for an unemployed addict fighting an uphill battle day to day - compared with an employed addict with a sound support system?

I'd like to see the teenagers of 'low income families' rounded up each summer , taken out to the farms, and pick vegetables for actual wages.

i wouldn't specify the work, but yeah, giving teenagers the opportunity to earn money would be a eye-opener for a lot of kids.

Investment?

Most of us use that term when allocating money or resources with the reasonable expectation that we will reap a larger return.

In other words "patching a hole in your roof" is not an investment.

Especially when the workmen never show up after getting paid..... which is what we have seen in the poverty programs.

After 60 years and billions transferred from some people to others.... (with Gov't consuming huge amounts along the way) when do we start seeing a "return on investment?"

Why should the working class young couple fund someone else's day-care, simply because they failed to do the basic thing of graduating from school and wait till they were married to have kids?

Think about it... why is the person doing right... made to cover the other persons choices.... And why would people making wrong choices ever realize the choices are wrong if there is little down-side?

You as suggesting we "invest" in more failure, though it first destroyed families and now has grown such a dysfunctional culture that even when a child is shot, no witness will even call and drop a dime on what they saw.

While there are no perfect solutions in dealing with poverty and what the "war on poverty" has flourished into.... the first step is for most of us to realize we have to do something drastically different.

If you ask me,... you as suggesting we "invest" in more failure, and one can turn on the nightly news and watch how it first destroyed families and now has grown into such a dysfunctional culture that even when a child is shot, no witness will even call and drop a dime on what they saw.

i'm sorry that you don't see the benefit to investing in humanity. i'm not going to go around in circles with you again on this topic. i'm not sure what your solution to generational poverty is, outside of shaming and chastising groups of people as determined by their, ahem, socio-economic status.
