Confusion about form 156 K

I'm helping my fiance fill out the form 156K and we ran across the following statement:

THE FOLLOWING DOCUMENTS MUST BE ATTACHED IN ORDER TO APPLY FOR A FIANCE(E) NONIMMIGRANT VISA: Evidence of Engagement to Your Fiancé(e)

I don't remember hearing mention of this before. Is this in reference to the letter of intent? Or is some other proof necessary like an engagement ring? We decided not to invest in an engagement ring and haven't purchased our wedding rings yet.

Any advice?

Thanks in advance!!

K1 Visa approved after 7 months and 24 days :D:) <3

Please, please, please, let me get what I want! ...got it [almost!] next step visa interview!

i remember seeing that question in our form too when we applied for the fiancee visa, we basically sent in pictures of the engagement ring with my fiancee wearing it and the purchase receipt for it. We did not send a letter of intent though, but have sent other proofs of knowing each together for many years.

Sorry couldn't provide more of a clarification, maybe others know better answers to that.

Best of luck in your journey!

Thanks for your response! I hope this isn't the only solution as it would be a shame to have to halt the process now to order rings...ugh. I feel like it's a silly thing to require. Isn't all this paperwork, our relationship evidence and time spent waiting proof enough of engagement? :hehe:

I don't think you NEED the receipt of your engagement ring or pictures of it. if you have all that stuff, send it in. But I believe the term actually refers to evidence to prove that you are still a couple, you still want to get married and have stayed in touch since filing your petition.

What you first sent in with your I-129F was just proof that you have actually met in person sometime within the last 2 years.

Now they want you to prove that nothing has changed since filing :)

So send in more pictures, receipts, boarding passes etc.

People, correct me if I'm wrong!

We didn't send any pictures (or receipts) of my ring or our engagement party and we didn't get any RFEs, we were approved with no problems. Just include anything that shows an ongoing relationship...more pictures, chat logs, skype, facebook, emails. If there's anything I can help you with, feel free to send me a message =)

Ok, thanks for your input everyone. I haven't seen my fiance in 7 months (:crying:) . All we have are chats, letters, emails. So basically...the evidence of an ongoing relationship should be attached to this form? I was thinking of attaching the letter of intent to this as well.

Yes it's referring to the new Letters Of Intent both of you have to submit, again, with new dates and original signatures.....plus any other evidence of an ongoing relationship. A formal engagement is not required.

i totally agree! I've been with my fiancee for about 7 years now, he regularly comes visit in Montreal when work gives him time off, we both have been across the border many times this past year and before with no problems on day trips or visiting my familly in MA. They can see all that in the system if they enter the passport numbers, we have also provided fotos of us together at familly gatherings etc, so im sure rings arent a necessity, we only sent our photos and receips because we had them at the time. And if waiting nearly 8 months isn't proof enough that we are still interested in getting married then what is?

Hence why they want an updated letter of intent at most consultaes. That's usually your proof - a written statement from your USC and 156K is your letter of intent.

Only a few high fraud countries want proof of the actual engagement, or if it's the norm to have an engagement party. I wouldn't include anything that has to do with receipts from buying a dress or rings because it could easily backfire on you to where it looks as if you could already be married.

I'd suggest reading a few reviews from the embassy you'll be interviewing at to get an idea of the procedure.
