Solar power plant would destroy Bedminster's quality of life

These signs have been popping up around Bedminster and Bernards townships, and are created by members of the Preserve Bedminster group, which opposes a solar power plant proposal currently before the town's land use board.

Citizens of Bedminster, the Somerset Hills, Somerset County and the State of New Jersey, beware. Some of your own corporate citizens and local residents are putting commerce above the public good.

Yes, right in their own backyard, our own backyard, they are proposing to destroy the very environment that sustains us by constructing 49,000 8-foot high solar panels on 55 acres of the 106 acre Kirby Farm in Bedminster, including the clear-cutting of 38 acres of forests and the removal of a landmark barn, all in the name of saving the environment.

We don't support achieving that goal by destroying natural resources to achieve it. New Jersey never intended that industrial-scale solar power plants be built in low-density rural residential areas. In fact, they intended that they be built on the very industrial sites that are to use the very power generated. This was later modified to allow the solar power plants to also be built on lands contiguous to the end-user site.

So now, by a stretch of regulator BPU's, developer KDC Solar's and end-user Sanofi's imaginations, they quietly settled among themselves that the location of the Sanofi campus, located 1500 to 2000 feet from the Kirby Farm and separated by 13 traffic lanes of I287 and I78 access to I287 and Country Club Road, is now to be considered contiguous. Wow, what a stretch, what an imagination!

The use of solar panels to cover over farmland and open space, including clear-cutting of forests, is not in the interests of sustainability nor the environment. There is no need to invade prime farmland, environmentally critical areas, historic districts, parks, and wildlife habitats to meet our statewide planning objectives for renewable energy. And in this case, there is sufficient space at the Sanofi campus to develop the solar power plant.

Bedminster, Somerset Hills, Somerset County and New Jersey residents beware. Should this be allowed to happen, it is the beginning of the end of rural residential Bedminster and other similar lands and their sought after quality of life.
