RRSP / US Tax Return

This should be in the Tax section but I couldn't figure out how to do that.

I've been searching all over for help but I haven't found the help i'm looking for. I did check out the Serbinski forum and to be honest all he kept saying was "your CPA doesn't know anything". I'm sure he knows his stuff but that answer over and over again is not very helpful :)

This my background

-Arrived in the US september 2012 on a K1 Visa

-Married in september - currently waiting for Greencard

-withdrew my RRSP contributions when I was in the US in september

I thought originally I would file that with my Canadian taxes but my Canadian accountant said I had to do in the US because my RRSP issued me a NR4.

I haven't started working yet so I have nothing else to report but the RRSP so i'd like to try and do it myself to save some money (also I heard that American accountants aren't familiar with cross border taxes)

Does anyone have any experience with this?

Do I a)need to file a US return for just this RRSP or can i just file it with my Canadian Taxes

b)what forms do i need to file out (1116, 1040 NR or 1040, 8891)

if anyone has any experience doing this and could help me out, that would be great.

Thanks!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1
