Hello,

I wasn't sure what forum to ask this in so I picked the general one.

Now I know I am a tiny bit prematire with this as I don't have my visa yet but hey ho I am optimist about getting it so I shall ask away.

I have 2 questions really.

Firstly I will obviously be getting married to Dan and I would like to take his surname. Now my passport is in my current name and the visa will be too. How do I go about getting the passport changed or do I not need to? What happens about all the visa stuff?

Secondly I only have 2 years left in my passport. When I'm over there who/what/where do I contact about getting a new one?

I will be in the state of Oklahoma if that makes any difference and I have a UK passport.

If anyone knows anything about this as I am curious!

Thanks for your time.

Hi I had my passport updated to my married name... you have to download the forms from the Brittish Embassy website... it has to go to Washington they are the only place in the US that do passports... it costs $90.00 to ammend your name or $110 to get a new 10 year passport... I just got a new one as mine only had 2 years left...

They will return your old passport to you with the new one so you will still have your I-94 and your K1 to take with you to interview... it only took 2 weeks to get the new passport...

Not wanting to take over Lil_Halos topic, but this might help someone else with a similar question....I am just about to send my passport off to get my name changed and they want my divorce papers as well as my Marriage Certificate - anyone know if I have to send the original divorce decree?

I have a couple of copies of my Marriage cert., so it's not a problem to part with an original....but I only have one original of my decree and am reluctant to part with it.

Wow Jen, I never thought of that. Divorce papers hmmm. I know they are generally very good at sending papers back - I remember from when I applied for the kids' passports.

I am lazy and was going to keep my passport in my previous name until it is nearer to running out. However, I know it irritates Al that my credit cards still bear my ex's name! Poor lamb.

Gah, I don't even want to think about what a hassle a name change is going to be. Has anyone had the experience of changing one's name socially but not changing it on any paperwork?

Yes Faith...but it's going to be hassle trying to get one from the UK when I'm here. I thought that if it did get lost, then when I went back to the UK I could pick one up from the Court (think it only costs 1 pound)...but if a photocopy would have done for the passport then I would rather send that.

Probably will just send the original....don't want any hold-ups on it....thanks

You're lucky you can change your name on your passport... Australia won't let you do it any more and they've made it such an incredible hassle to get a new one from overseas that I won't be bothering to... if I ever go back to Oz for an extended vacation I'll do it then.
