Why would you do it, since you are submitting the documents within the 90-day period?

My wife is traveling back to Japan to visit family, so she won't be here to sign the I-751 at the start of the 90-day window.

your wife can signed the 1-751 application but date the application on the day that you are going to send out the application as long as it is dated the day you are sending it out. another words, pre-date the application.

Is that legal?

I dated mine early because my hubby is deployed and he mailed it to me signed a month early and mine was dated two days early but it was accepted. I mailed mine on the day my window opened. However I explained on the cover letter that he was deployed

My Journey:

We met through a study-abroad program in Shanghai, China in August of 2009

We got engaged March of 2010

I received my K1 VISA in 6 months (June-December 2010)

We were married 04/02/2011
I received my conditional 2-year greencard (AOS) in 2.5 months with no interview (April-June 2011)

Our son was born 02/03/2013

I received my masters degree in Speech-Language Pathology 04/17/2013

I received my 10-year greencard (ROC) in 3 months with no interview (March-June 2013)

My husband returned from deployment 06/20/2013

My naturalization journey took 4 months (April-August 2014)

I became a US citizen on 08/01/2014

Received passport in 3 weeks (regular processing)

Actually, The correct term is post-date not pre-date. I would date it the day you plan on mailing it. I would think it is much more important that it is each spouse's original signature than the exact date you enter.

I-751 has just the signature and date of signature but no place of signature, hence she can sign and enter a future date (within the 90 days period) and still be legally be right. If the application has place of signature also, then it would have been an issue for your wife.
