Time outside of the US

I married an American and have lived almost 3 years in the US. Before moving to the US, we lived in Canada. I just received my 10 year green card and am applying for naturalization now.

I’m filling out form N-400 ‘Application for Naturalization’ and need help with question 7A & B (Time Outside the United States). They are asking how many days and how many trips I’ve taken outside the US in the past 5 years but I’ve only lived in the US for 3 years. It seems to be a mistake (they should have written "since you have been a lawful permanent resident" instead of " during the past 5 years") because I am answer B. in Part 2 of the N-400 form.

Can I fill out N/A and attach an extra page explaining it?

If I answer honestly that I’ve spent over 2 years outside the country they might accidentally throw out my application (because I was living in Canada before moving to the US). What’s the best way to answer in my case?

Thank you in advance!

Its not a mistake most people apply based on 5 years - the form is geared for 5 year applicants. You just answer for 3 years only if you are applying based on the 3 year rule. Your cover letter would state you are applying for N400 based on 3 years of marriage to the US citizen. You only need to attach a sheet if you made too many trips to list on the available space.

Your I-129f was approved in 5 days from your NOA1 date.

Your interview took 67 days from your I-129F NOA1 date.

AOS was approved in 2 months and 8 days without interview.

ROC was approved in 3 months and 2 days without interview.

I am a Citizen of the United States of America. 04/16/13
