Assault Rifles Kill 5 People Every Year in NY, While Obesity Kills 6,000: Do Gun Bans Make Sense?

FBI data shows that in all of New York state, there were 774 total homicides in 2011. Of those, 445 were firearm homicides. Total rifle homicides numbered just five. The "hands, fist, feet, etc." category, which includes pushing, numbered 26 homicides (NYC has also recently made headlines for subway pushing deaths). Knives were used in 160 homicides. The "other weapons" category numbered 143 homicides. Ban “dangerous assault weapons” (a subset of the rifles category)? Why? They numbered just five deaths.

Perhaps because of the percentage of population that NYC comprises of the total state of New York, and perhaps also because of the tendency of crimes to increase in concentrated urban centers, NYC itself saw the majority of homicides in the state. In 2011, NYC saw 515 homicides out of the total 774 in the state. Three hundred-fourteen of these (61%) were from firearms, out of the 445 total firearm homicides statewide.

Contrasted with obesity deaths, NYC city alone has 5,800 of them a year. New York City Department of Health states 58% of NYC adults are overweight or obese, and nearly 40% of NYC’s public school students are obese or overweight. Obesity among adults in NYC increased from 18% in 2002 to 23% in 2010.

Have faith. Homicides are headed down and under control in New York because the killers will soon be limited to 7 rounds in their 10-round clips. This is the finest and most effective example of crime control I have ever heard of.

It is against the law to buy any gun with evil features in NY State. A .22 with a thumb hole stock for example. After the law was passed in January NO purchases are lawfull.10 round mags are included so only a few (2) glocks can be sold as glock will not make mags for the other models.

It is difficult enough t control the idiots in congress let alone the state legislatures. But there is a bright side to it. The legislation in New York has prompted an NRA lawsuit demanding an injunction and ruling on constitutionality based on the Heller and McDonald decisions (you knew those two would be good for something...right?) I always made it clear I was speaking of FEDERAL legislation, hence the comment "see me when OBAMA signs something"

The law is not self enforcing and sometimes we need idiots to do things so they can be made an example of and protect the rest of us...just as Washington DC did in the Heller case and Chicago did in the McDonald case. It is a shame for people living in the Penal Colony of New York (Freedom is just across that lake people! You can swim it in summer! Narrower than the English channel...go for it!) But in the end the result will be protection for all of us from idiots. Look, some people suffered until they eliminated frivolous lawsuits against firearms manufacturers, and we suffered under GCA '68 for 18 years. In 1985 there were FIVE states that allowed concealed carry. Now there are 49. 42 of them on a "shall issue" or "no permit needed" basis. We are making progress and every one of these attempts fills NRA's coffers with funds to pursue these lawsuits and gain back whatever was lost PLUS protect it for the future.
