Filing before the "formal proposal"

My boyfriend has not formally proposed yet (as a family situation made it inappropriate to do so the last time we were together), but we both want to get married ASAP and have talked about it a lot. He wants to wait until we are together in person again (rather than over the phone), but in the meantime we are going to file our K-1. I am probably worrying over nothing here, but a formal proposal is not required anyway, right? As long as we both submitted an intent to marry form? I know at the interview stage of the process, they often ask questions about how you got engaged, etc. Would it be a bad thing to say he proposed after we already submitted our petition? I'm sure similar situations must happen with long-distance couples all the time. I am interested in what everyone thinks. Thanks!

Exactly! Just don't mention the date you got engaged and when asked the question at the interview: reply directly to the question--HOW not WHEN.....Good luck

I am also in the same situation. He proposed me over a phone in December 2012, I accepted, then he filed for K1 in Jan 2013 and he is coming in April, that time we are having formal exchange of rings.

My fiancee and I filed the petition in January then he proposed when we saw eachother in February

We figured the sooner we sent the application the better. And like the above poster said as far as the person adjudicating your account is concerned you are engaged if you both sign the intent to marry form. For all they know you may not be able to afford a ring.
