Do we need to include assets?

Hi I have a few questions

My husband is SELF-EMPLOYED and his income this year will be approx. $45,000 (he has made $25,000 as of today)

Our household size is 2, so the poverty line amount needed is $18,912.

He only started his business during the last 5 months of 2012 and his income tax number for 2012 was only $18,472 (originally it was $19,972 but had to declare a -1500 loss from selling his stocks last year at a loss)

Since the 2012 number is $18,472 and the required is $18,912 that leaves us around 500 dollars short. My question is what are the immigration peeps going to look at? the $45,000 income for this year OR the income made in 2012?

If they are going to look at 2012 taxes I guess we could use his assets to supplement? He has around $11,000 right now in the Bank and I know that the amount should be x3 the difference, so $11,000 is more than plenty. But anyways, do we need to include those assets or just leave it as is and only send 2012 taxes and wait to see if they ask us for further proof of income/assets?

Send in the 2012 taxes, along with filling out the information as far as the assets you hold in the bank. We were short on our 2011 taxes for a family of 3. We had more than enough in the bank to cover the 3x difference and just put cash assets on the line and sent in a copy of our bank statements. I'd recommend sending several months worth of statements, just so they know that the money didn't suddenly appear.

We are neither of us self-employed, so I can't advise you on anything in reference to that, but using income + assets to qualify worked for us.
