That would only get him a larger dose of Thorazine and less hard surfaces in his cell.

Exactly. That's about the best future he can hope for right now.

I think it is just to get better food in prison. If he cannot eat regular prison food because of his new found belief (pork may have touched a spoon used to prepare food for the rest of the population) something special would have to be prepared for him every meal. I know someone doing time and the food is very bad most days.

The liberal elite ... know that the people simply cannot be trusted; that they are incapable of just and fair self-government; that left to their own devices, their society will be racist, sexist, homophobic, and inequitable -- and the liberal elite know how to fix things. It is possible, I know that quite a few people claim our religion, Asatru, in prison in order to get days off prison duties due to religious holidays.

I wonder why he chose that specific religion to justify the murder of innocent people?

If you have ever spent time around the evangelicals you would know that Islam has no lock on using God to justify abhorrent and stupid behavior. The difference in them and us is our constiuion keeps our nuts at bay.

Can you imagine this country if Pat Robertson's family was the ruling family.

To be fair, if that were the case, we would be building universities, feeding massive amount of poor people, Building and staffing Orphanages, opening schools where none exist and many other laudable works.... all without tax money.

In exchange we would hear the occasional Stupid-azz comment.

Actually we had many years under the constitution where some States required elected officials to have a faith in God. There were no schools except in homes and church schools. The Bible was taught in

public schools and it was roundly excepted as "the foundation of eduction."

We don't anymore, can you make the case that Students are now better educated, make better citizens, are more active in their communities.... that as a nation we are now prospering?

You fear a boggyman that exists only in your mind.

Where were the horror stories of people being forced to go to church or support a denomination?

One has to roll all the way back to the Salem Witch trials to recall any such reality to what you fear. How many centuries ago was that? Name for me one country... just one that can match that record.

Without the Church... Slavery would have prevailed around the world into the 1900's. (in some places it did anyway)

This nation prospered because of.... not in spite of our Faith.

The seeds of Equality is human rights were planted here and though we pleasure in flogging ourselves because the tree did not grow fast enough, I ask you to name for me the Society which did it better in that point of history?

My friend if I may suggest some reading ?

I want you to read more of Alexis de Tocqueville, I know you would appreciate this French Statesmans observations upon exploring this country during the 1800.s and as a social scientist, what he found so remarkable.

I will include his observations on the spiritual life and what it meant to this nation...... but he wrote so much more which have to do with citizens and government, such profound understanding I don't think can be matched.

Read his writing called DEMOCRACY IN AMERICA.

http://www.goodreads.com/author/quotes/465.Alexis_de_Tocqueville

-----------------------------------------------

Upon my arrival in the United States the religious aspect of the country was the first thing that struck my attention; and the longer I stayed there, the more I perceived the great political consequences resulting from this new state of things. In France I had almost always seen the spirit of religion and the spirit of freedom marching in opposite directions. But in America I found they were intimately united and that they reigned in common over the same country.Alexis De Tocqueville: "Democracy in America"

Religion in America ... must be regarded as the foremost of the political institutions of that country; for if it does not impart a taste for freedom, it facilitates the use of it. Indeed, it is in this same point of view that the inhabitants of the United States themselves look upon religious belief. I do not know whether all Americans have a sincere faith in their religion-for who can search the human heart?-But I am certain that they hold it to be indispensable to the maintenance of republican institutions. This opinion is not peculiar to a class of citizens or a party, but it belongs to the whole nation and to every rank of society.Alexis De Tocqueville: "Democracy in America"

The sects that exist in the United States are innumerable. They all differ in respect to the worship which is due to the Creator; but they all agree in respect to the duties which are due from man to man. Each sect adores the Deity in its own peculiar manner, but all sects preach the same moral law in the name of God....

Moreover, all the sects of the United States are comprised within the great unity of Christianity, and Christian morality is everywhere the same.- Alexis De Tocqueville: "Democracy in America"

There is no country in the world where the Christian religion retains a greater influence over the souls of men than in America, and there can be no greater proof of its utility and of its conformity to human nature than that its influence is powerfully felt over the most enlightened and free nation of the earth.

In the United States, if a political character attacks a sect [denomination], this may not prevent even the partisans of that very sect, from supporting him; but if he attacks all the sects together [Christianity], every one abandons him and he remains alone.

I do not question that the great austerity of manners that is observable in the United States arises, in the first instance, from religious faith... .its influence over the mind of woman is supreme, and women are the protectors of morals. There is certainly no country in the world where the tie of marriage is more respected than in America or where conjugal happiness is more highly or worthily appreciated... ~

In the United States the influence of religion is not confined to the manners, but it extends to the intelligence of the people.... Christianity, therefore reigns without obstacle, by universal consent; the consequence is, as I have before observed, that every principle of the moral world is fixed and determinate..

I sought for the key to the greatness and genius of America in her harbors...; in her fertile fields and boundless forests; in her rich mines and vast world commerce; in her public school system and institutions of learning. I sought for it in her democratic Congress and in her matchless Constitution. Not until I went into the churches of America and heard her pulpits flame with righteousness did I understand the secret of her genius and power. America is great because America is good, and if America ever ceases to be good, America will cease to be great.

The safeguard of morality is religion, and morality is the best security of law as well as the surest pledge of freedom.

The Americans combine the notions of Christianity and of liberty so intimately in their minds, that it is impossible to make them conceive the one without the other.

Christianity is the companion of liberty in all its conflicts-the cradle of its infancy, and the divine source of its claims.

They brought with them...a form of Christianity, which I cannot better describe, than by styling it a democratic and republican religion... .From the earliest settlement of the emigrants, politics and religion contracted an alliance which has never been dissolved.

Hit that Link I gave for some serious quotes of his. (some you have I am sure heard before)

The Founding Fathers were wisest in their wording of the First Amendment. Fortunately they remembered all the persecution and evil that was done in the name of some god, the very reason many fled to America and died to make sure the newborn country remained secular. It is a slap in the face of every veteran and fallen American to presume and advocate we should let the madness of religious superstition slither into our government.

Amen brother.. wait I mean I agree.

But neither should our government thwart the right of the people to worship as they see fit.

Agree again! One caveat, that 'worship as they see fit' should never supersede the law.
