Just to ask u guys...i have Immigrant Visa and will be travelling to US. However, along with the Brown envelope that i got from Embassy, i received a paper from Social Security Administration mentioning details how to obtain SSN. They mention that if i have requested a SSN on DS-230 form, i am not required to visit local SSN office after being admitted on IV, they will send me card within 3 weeks.I have requested a card on my DS-230 form.

But, i have heard from many people that their SSN does not arrive even after they immigrate and they have to then apply after a month or so to get their SSN. Should i go to nearest SSN office immediately after immigrating along with passport and Birth certificate or wait for SSN to come within 3 weeeks...???

My POE will be NEWARK EWR....

One more question, i will be staying in Philadelphia. For Driving Lisence, should i bring International Driving Lisence or not...??? Is it beneficial to get International Driving Lisence ....????

Advise highly appreciated ....

If you requested a card on your form, wait a few weeks after you arrive and if it has not shown up in the mail, drop in to your local SSA office. I have read timelines where the cards have shown up promptly and others, like you have seen, that don't show up at all.

Here is a thread on driving in PA. You will need to surrender your foreign license 60 days after establishing residency. In the meantime, you may drive on a foreign license.

Thanks for the advise....So, i will wait for some weeks after arrival to get SSN. Thanks for the link..its really very useful.

I was told I'd get it within 3 weeks. I waited 3 weeks and it never arrived so I went to the SS office and filled out a form and got it in the mail within a week.
