What will happen now...

Harry Reid will bring the committee passed background checks to the Senate Floor. The NRA will add their amendments for concealed carry reciprocity and for the internet based background check system allowing buyers to prepare background check reports before going to gun shows.

The same people that wanted gun control will vote against and the issue dies. Move on to the next political soap opera.

The NRA's amendments get rejected in the Senate, it passes and goes to the House where the NRA amendments are added and approved, (the House already approved these things independently) it goes back to the Senate and the Senate kills it. Either way, the people that proposed this mess are the same ones that will kill it.

They would be the ones that are no longer commenting on this issue. Gun control is a "third rail" issue right in there with Social Security. This is why Obama said nothing about all the other shootings, including the assault rifle enthusiast, Gabby Giffords. UNTIL he no longer could be elected and then the diarrhea of the mouth begins.

The Dems had their @sses handed to them in 1994 because of the Assault Weapons "ban" which was not even a ban. They will never do it again. Idiots will try to tell you that the issue was not why they lost...BULLSH*T and this is the proof. Only idiots cannot figure it out.

Sure, there are other issues but when one looks at the margin of victory, even in normally "safe" Democrat districts it cannot cover for pissing off the gun owners. Piss off the gun owners and YOU LOSE your job.

I have been a life member of the NRA since 1973. I was at the members meeting in 1977 where we voted to enter politics and legislation. I study this issue closely. It is a lifelong enthusiasm of mine. I am a collector and shooter and I know about firearms, inside and out.

The proposed legislation is such nonsense. At some point most politicians are not going to risk their job for something that really does not matter. Seriously it is like trying to reduce car accidents or drunk driving by banning whitewall tires and power windows! It is so totally inane that it is difficult to get even 320 people to vote for it in congress. Impossible actually.

As in all politics the NRA "needs an enemy" to survive. When Reagan was in office we made excellent progress in eliminating the GCA '68, but membership fell and the coffers were bare. Gun sales lagged. Several old line American gun companies floundered. Ithaca, Savage, Springfield Armory, even S&W went in and out of business several times...Colt never did recover and now the old factory is a shopping mall. Enter Bill Clinton and the NRA takes off, membership doubled, donations doubled, and while he did pass the "Brady Act" and AWB it was not until amendments were added that eventually benefited the NRA and the result was the decimation of the Democrat party.

Obama has been a huge boost to the NRA. At first on the speculation that he would be very anti-gun based on his minuscule prior voting record. But like other politicians he was scared to death until he no longer had to stand for election. After initial boosts in gun sales and membership,things died down. But then this happened and again the reservoir is full and gun sales are soaring.

Even the legislation that WAS passed in 1993 and 1994 was so compromised by the NRA I am surprised it ever passed. But Clinton need to show "something". The Brady Act was totally turned inside out, the waiting period was completely eliminated and replaced by the instant background checks (anti gun idiots were against it but now they want it for all sales) It also ended the idiotic practice of labeling firearms in checked baggage on airlines which...big surprise...reduced stolen firearms in checked baggage! It also provided that common carriers (airlines) MUST accept firearms in checked baggage. The Brady Act was, in fact, one of the better things that ever happened for gun owners.

The AWB in 1994 was not passed until the grandfather provision was added and the 10 year sunset rule. At no time during the 10 year period were high capacity magazines in short supply. You could mail order them at discount prices right up until the "ban" ended in 2004. Why? Because Bill Clinton demanded that congress pass the law before they went on summer recess "Criminals do not take a vacation" he said. Then HE went in vacation and did not sign the law until 2 months later. the "ban" applied to the bodies of magazines made after the law was signed. For 2 months the manufacturers did nothing but crank out stamped sheet metal magazine bodies, day and night, 24/7. Have you ever seen these magazines made? Sheet metal coils are fed into a machine and formed magazine bodies pop out the other side at the rate of thousands per hour. They are made in a process similar to seamless gutters. "Pre-ban" rifle receivers were being extruded by the millions.

Ignorant people think "Oh this time is different!" No. It isn't. Joe Biden just went on a trip to France where he and his entourage spent more than $500,000 for ONE night in Paris. This is how they live. They are aristocracy! The US congress has a lower turnover rate that the Soviet Politburo. There is no way they could get perks like this in private industry. They are not going to risk it for what...a useless gun law?

Lets analyze this, shall we?

There are no "conspiracy theorists". The NRA uses this attempt by Obama to raise funds and increase membership. They are no more going to say "Don't worry about it" than Global Warming folks are going to say "Don't give us money, there is no global warming" Obama and the Dems simply FED the NRA the opportunity to make money and increase membership...and the gun manufacturers a chance to increase sales. You expect them not to go with it? Is it worse than what the Dems did using the tragic deaths of children to advance THEIR agenda? Seriously?

It does not matter if a "majority of Americans" support this. The majority of Americans do not vote...the VAST majority do not vote. Opinions are like @ssholes, everyone has one, but only 20-25% of citizens actually vote. With margins of victory that are usually 2-5% in many districts, that is not worth risking for a gun law that won't work. 3-6% of the electorate in any given district can put these guys on the street. Hellllllllooooooooo Gun owners.
