Hi guys quick question.

My husband (USC) wants to know if I can be claimed as a dependent on his taxes for last yr. We got married late summer and we just filed AOS so I now have an alien number but no ssn. Can i be added on there or will i be left off until I get a social. Thanks in advance for your responses.

Yes, he can add you. he would fill out IRS form w-7.

9/17/2011 - sent I-13

09/19/2011 - noa1 received

3/16/2012 - case sent to my local USCIS office for additional processing

4/21/2012 - AP. If we haven't heard from them in SIX MONTHS (omg) we can feel free to call them!!! Thanks!

9/20/2012 - Interview scheduled - October 3!!!!

10/3/2012 - Interview went well but she must look at his A-file more before decision.

10/12/2012 - I-130 APPROVED! APPROVED! APPROVED!

if you download the w-7 form from the IRS.GOV also down load the instructions very important read very carefully.the if your married then yes you can put her down as a dependent 1040 tax return must be sent to the Austin tx office only along with your w-7 and your ID'S, there are also other ways to do your 1040 return put in your wifes space where s.s number goes you put NRA in that space take it to a local IRS office get a receipt that you filed, from the clark.they will ship your 1040 taxes to Austin tx office you should get a paper check refund.in the mail.

Agree with Hypnos. A spouse can never be a dependent. When people say this they are usually confusing the concepts of dependents and exemptions. The main point of having a dependent is for the exemption. A spouse, if filing as married filing jointly, already has an exemption; so a spouse already serves the purpose that a dependent would serve. But a spouse is more -- being able to file as married filing jointly often saves a lot of taxes compared to married filing separately.

Thank you so much for your answer and clarification. I am the immigrant so the whole concept of exemptions and dependents is new to me.
